The readings are:
1) The American College Turns 100
2) The Basic Documents: The Founding of Ontario Colleges
3) Community College in Canada: a Profile.
4) The View from Here: What’s Ahead for Teaching and Learning in Community
Colleges
Pre-Assignment:
1) What features of the Ontario Colleges do you find most interesting? Name four.
2) In your opinion, outline how the Ontario Colleges are similar to the US movement.
3) How are the Ontario Colleges different than the US colleges?
Come to Class prepared to:
1) provide a brief outline of your personal learnings (3-5pages)
2) discuss your ideas with other candidates
Outcome: This discussion should introduce you to the history of the Community
College.

Seminar Guidelines
1. Topics for the seminars are prescribed, or are listed under Section 5 of
the course outline. Each topic will be presented once only within the
course.
2. Seminar teams will comprise of 3,4 or 5 persons.
3. A sign-up sheet for seminars will be provided by the course director.
4. Each seminar will be for one hour in length and the format for each
seminar will be:
Seminar Presentation
Review/feedback from audience
40 minutes
20 minutes
5. Feedback sheets are provided for input from audience.
6. A review sheet is provided for final comments by the presenters.
7. All feedback sheets, presenters’ review, and seminar materials must be
handed to the course director at the end of each presentation.

Your personal educational philosophy, if you were an employee of a
Community College, and describe your core values (beliefs) and
behaviours.
How you would evaluate yourself? You could reflect, or you could draw
from, the elitist, humanist, the interventionist, and the learning-centred
models.
Length of Statement: One to three pages, typed, double-spaced.

Guidelines for Interview and Report
1. Conduct an interview with a knowledgeable college staff member in a
community college to determine his/her comments on the following:
a)
contributions made by the Colleges of Applied Arts and
Technology (CAATs) of Ontario to the education of students;
b)
problems and concerns facing the (CAATs) in the future;
c)
opportunities for the future.
2. Prepare a written report, highlighting all of the above points, and
conclude with your analysis of such interview.
Report headings must include:
a)
your name
b)
name of college staff member interviewed, title, college
c)
problems and concerns facing the CAATs for the future
d)
opportunities for the future
e)
interviewer’s analysis of the information provided.
Length of analysis report: minimum 3 pages, typed, doublespaced.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR A BOOK REPORT
PURPOSE:



To gain familiarity with at least one significant book on, or relating to, the
Community College.
To demonstrate an ability to critically analyze such a book.
To relate the ideas and methodologies in the chosen work to the candidate’s
professional life through identifying potential applications.
SELECTION:


Any book on the reading lists distributed in class or identified by the Course
Director, or
Any work relating to Community Colleges and approved, in advance, by the
Course Director.
EVALUTATION:

To be satisfactory, the report should:
a) follow the format provided on this page;
b) address each point explicitly and concisely, and
c) be NO MORE THAN THREE PAGES in length (typed, double-spaced).
FORMAT
1. Title of book in appropriate bibliographic citation form.
2. Why you selected this work (i.e. what need or interest it addresses, or what you hope to
get from it.
3. Brief summary of major theme of the work, and assessment of how well the author uses
data, argument, and logic in establishing the major theme.
4. THREE things you liked about the work and why – the latter in terms of how it assists your
learning, how it illuminates or confirms your own experiences, or the richness of potential
applications in your professional life.
5. Your major concern about the book (in terms of the dimensions noted in #4 above) or wish
about something the author might have done differently.
6. ONE application, next step, or thing that you might do in your work or professional
development that follows from this book. It might be a research study, a list, something
else you want to read, someone you want to interview, an idea that you want to reflect
upon, or an article you want to write, etc.
