Laboratory Manual Hole’s Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology 9th ed., McGraw- Hill McKenna, Mary. Biological Science 15: Survey of Human Anatomy and Physiology , Gavilan Community College This 6 week summer course will cover the same material that is offered in the regular 16 week semester. We are required to cover approx. three chapters and six to eight lab exercises per week. The 3-hour laboratories have multiple lab exercises daily if we are to achieve this goal. This is a fast paced course and requires your full participation both online and offline. Flashcards, good note taking skills, and ‘Group-Learning’ are essential for success in this course. This course is required for admission to the LVN program at Gavilan and other community college nursing programs and is CSU, UC transferable. It is also required for the P.E. degree at Gavilan and can be used to help fulfill the GE requirement for science. Principles of Biology (Bio 10) is a highly recommended for this course. Cadavers MAY be used in this course and it is our obligation to inform you that it is preserved in a mutagenic. Students should protect themselves properly (use face masks, Lab coats and gloves) when observing the cadavers and/or specimens. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Develop a detailed understanding of the anatomical and physiological aspects of the Human body. 2. Develop an understanding of the physiological interactions and compensatory mechanisms used by the body’s organ system in maintaining homeostasis. 3. Develop critical thinking skills through the use of the scientific method. 4. Prepare students choosing careers in allied health professions such as nutrition, psychology, sports medicine, and holistic health. 5. Where time permits study various pathologies, and methods by which physicians make specific diagnosis. Some basic pharmacology may be included as well as interactive case studies. COURSE ORGANIZATION: Material will be presented primarily in the form of online lectures, readings assignments from the text/supplement, and ‘active’ group learning assignments may include interactive case studies. Lecture presentations will cover the points to be learned and will direct your study from the text, however some material will be presented in lab that is not in the text and thus, you are required to attend all class labs and take good notes. Each day, you should plan on spending 4-6 hours of study outside of our laboratory sessions to be successful. 6/18-7/27 BIO 15 ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY SS2008 COURSE LAB ASSIGNMENTS: 99 points (approx. 33 lab assignments at 3 pts each) There will be approximately 6-8 lab assignments per week that come from the Hole’s Essential Lab manual. Each laboratory assignment/exercise is worth 3 points each and due the day of lab or otherwise noted. There are no make-ups for missed laboratory assignments. If you miss a class you forfeit 2 laboratory assignment points! If you leave early you will loose points. LECTURE HOMEWORK AND HANDOUTS: 45 points (approx. 17 study outline handouts) Approximately 16-18 lecture assignments (Study Outlines) taken from the course website and from McKenna’s Bio 15 Supplementary Manual will be given throughout the quarter and are 3 points each. Online lecture assignments may be assigned and are collected throughout the course. No late assignments will be accepted!- for any reason! LECTURE TAKE HOME QUIZZES: 25 points (Best 5 out of 6 scores). Each quiz is worth 5 points. Each quiz consists of five short answer type questions that cover the most recent lecture topics and assignments. No make-ups will be given for any reason; if you miss a quiz then you drop that score. MIDTERM EXAMINATIONS: 200 points (Best 4 out of 5 Midterm scores). There will be five Midterm exams each worth 50 points. The best 4 out of 5 will count towards your grade. Each exam will consist of multiple choice questions, and short answer type questions. Lecture, laboratory exercises, class assignments and reading material are all fair game. COMPREHENSIVE FINAL: 100 points (The Final is Mandatory!) There will be a comprehensive final given on the last day of class that will be worth 100 points. The final is mandatory and will not be an exam that can be dropped as the lowest dropped exam. LABORATORY QUIZZES: 100 points (Weekly! 15-20 points each) Weekly Lab quizzes will be given throughout the session worth anywhere from 15 to 20 points each and will consist of material learned in lab. These quizzes will typically be given on Thursday before our lecture exam. The format of each exam will primarily be identification with some matching and short answer concept questions. GRADING CRITERIA: Grading Policy: Course grades are based on the percentage of points earned. 4 Highest scores for the Midterm Exams @50 points each 200 points Comprehensive Final @100 points 100 points Lab Quizzes 100 points Take Home Quizzes 25 points Lab Activities 99 points Homework 45 points Participation 25 points 594 points NOTE: THIS TOTAL IS TENATIVE AND MAY CHANGE! Your grade will be determined based upon the total points earned on assignments, quizzes, and examinations (possible points for the semester). There is no provision for doing extra or outside work to improve your grade. 6/18-7/27 BIO 15 ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY SS2008 GRADING SCALE % 100- 92.5 92.4 - 88 87.9 - 86 85.9 - 82.5 82.4 - 78 77.9 - 75 74.9 - 68 67.9 - 58 GRADE A AB+ B BC+ C D < 57 F Please note that this point scale may vary and should only be used as a guideline for calculating course grade. ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION POINTS: 25 points. (5 pts deducted for each absence and 3 for each tardy). At the end of the session, your attendance will be reviewed. Perfect attendance and punctuality means that you keep the 25 points for class participation. Five points will be deducted for each absence and 3 for each tardy. If your 25 points are taken up for absences and/or tardiness you are subject to be dropped from the course. As per college policy, students missing one more class value than the unit value of the course may be dropped. If you foresee missing more than one or two days of class, please inform me. Please make arrangements with your schedule to be present and on time for all labs/lectures. SPECIAL CONCERNS: Students with special needs such as hear and/or vision impairment should make arrangement with the instructor. 6/18-7/27 BIO 15 ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY SS2008 TOPICS WEEK DATE TENTATIVE LECTURE LAB EXERCISE Labs from Hole’s Lab Book or Suppl.- McKenna’s Supplemental Book TEXT CHAPTERS * Selected Topics Organization of the Body 1 6/176/19 Intro Anatomy & Physiology and Chemical Basis of Life, & Cells Take Home Q1 Exam #1 1-Introduction to A&P 2- Chemical Basis of Life 3- Cells 4- Metabolism 5- Tissues Support and Movement “Skin and Skeletal” 2 6/246/26 Tissues & Skin Skeletal System Exam #2 “Muscle and Nerve” 3 7/1-7/3 Muscular System Nervous System Exam #3 Integration and Coordination “Sense and Endocrine” 4 7/87/10 Nervous, Somatic & Special Senses Endocrine Exam #4 Transport “Blood and Lymph” 5 7/157/17 Cardiovascular System Lymphatic System & Immunity Exam #5 Absorption and Excretion “Digestion, Respiratory & Urinary” 6 7/227/24 Digestion Respiratory System Urinary System Final Last day of Class T- Moodle website orientation Computer lab Lab 2 Foundations of A&P Suppl. p. 109 Suppl. – ( Chemistry p.105-113) & start Lab 5 Cell (parts A &B) W- Lab 6 Diffusion, osmosis and tonicity (Eggshell membrane & Blood) Lab 4 Microscopes Suppl. – (Microscope p. 103-104) Lab 5 continue Parts C & D Lab 8 & Lab 9- Epithelial and Connective tiss.
