POSTDOCTORAL HOUSING IN THE SCIENCE DIVISION
INFORMATION AND ELIGIBILITY
Faculty of Arts and Science maintains a limited pool of apartments reserved for eligible
postdoctoral fellowsin the five FAS science departments – Biology, Chemistry, Neural Science,
Physics, and Psychology. These apartments are intended to assist incoming postdocs who need
housing during their first three years at NYU and to facilitate engagement in research and
University life by providing housing within immediate walking distance of the laboratories. The
group of available apartments consists primarily of studios, with an average size of approximately
450 square feet. The average monthly rent for a studio, including utilities costs for heat and hot
water, is $1100 (gas and electric service is not included). There are a few one-bedroom
apartments reserved for postdocs with a dependent child who lives with them in postdoc housing
at least 9 months out of each year. The average rent of these units is $1400 and wait times are
often 1 year or longer, due to limited availability. Postdocs with children may apply for a studio, a
one-bedroom apartment, or both. Applicants who apply for both will be offered the earliest
available option. If a studio is provided, the applicant may also remain on the one-bedroom
waitlist and move into a one-bedroom apartment once a vacancy is available. (NYU does not pay
for moving expenses when a tenant upgrades to a one-bedroom unit.) All postdoc units are
provided unfurnished, come with basic kitchen appliances (refrigerator and stove/oven), and are
located within a five-minute walk from the science buildings.
ELIGIBILITY:
To be eligible for postdoc housing, an associate must have all of the following four qualifications:

Holds the title of Postdoctoral Fellow (Payroll Code 103/542) or Postdoctoral Associate (Payroll
Code 103)

Has received a doctoral degree within the five years prior to their NYU appointment

Has not held a tenure-track position

Works in the lab of an investigator whose primary appointment is in one of the five science
departments in FAS.
Eligibility is established via payroll records or, in the case of incoming associates, a letter of
appointment. There is a three-year occupancy limit for postdoc housing. Any postdoc terminating
their appointment for any reason must also vacate housing. Postdocs may vacate at any time
without penalty but must notify theproperty manager and the Liaison for Post Doctoral Housing at
least 30 days prior to leaving. With the exception of upgrades to one-bedroom apartments as
described above, moving from one postdoc apartmentto another is generally not permitted and
entails an administrative fee (not less than $1,500) to recoup the cost of cleaning, painting, and
lost rent.
PROCEDURE:
Incoming tenants must pay the following before obtaining keys to their new apartment: 1) first and
last months’ rent and 2) a one-month security deposit. The deposit is held by NYU’s property
manager for the duration of the postdoc’s stay and returned upon inspection and approval of the
vacant apartment. Applications for postdoctoral housing must be completed and submitted to the
department administrator as soon as start date and housing needs are determined. If the
application is accepted, the postdoc will be added to the housing waitlist. Wait time depends on
housing availability and is typically 3 to 6 months. Postdocs on the waitlist should contact their
departments to inquire about updates to their expected wait times.
