Gopher Athletics offers 25 NCAA sponsored Division I sports and participates in the Big Ten and WCHA conferences.
The Department's mission reads: To serve as a window to the University in an environment of integrity and equity
that enables student-athletes to achieve excellence in their academic and athletic pursuits. Gopher Athletics' vision
is to be the model Division I program in the country and has adopted core values that guide decisions and behaviors

Interns will be invited to participate in an on-going athletic department intern development program.

Internship: Athletic Communications (two openings)

Stipend: $1000/month

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience in related field as a student-assistant or intern.
Demonstrated writing and editing skills.
Strong attention to detail and an ability to meet deadlines.
Knowledge of statistical software programs (Statcrew), website content management systems,
layout/design software (QuarkXPress, InDesign, PhotoShop) and social media (Facebook, Twitter,
YouTube).
Internship Description:
You will be supervised by the Director of Athletic Communications. You will have an initial period of
observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will happen on a daily basis. You are expected
to ask for assistance when needed. The Athletic Communications staff, led by the director of Athletic
Communications, will mentor this internship. A general description of the internship opportunity is as
follows:
Receive “hands on” learning experiences with:
1.
All 25 Gopher sports and all aspects of the Athletic Communications Office.
2.
Public relations initiatives including story placement, social media campaigns and web strategy.
3.
Media contact for sport programs.
4.
Press releases, competition previews, game/meet notes, recaps and feature stories.
5.
Media operations at home events.
6.
Production of online media guides and printed game programs.
7.
Recording in-game statistics and compiling season statistics.
8.
Weekly reports to the Big Ten Conference.
9.
Content for gophersports.com.
Internship: Event Management (two openings)

Anticipated Start Date: 7/30/2012
Stipend: $1000/month

Internship Description:
You will be supervised by the Director of Event Management. You will have an initial period of
observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will happen on a daily basis. You are expected
to ask for assistance when needed. The Director and Assistant Director of Event Management will
mentor this internship. A general description of the internship opportunity is as follows:
Receive “hands on” learning experiences with:
1. University of Minnesota athletic events with an emphasis on crowd management, game
operations, participant movements, rule and policy creation, staffing, payroll, timelines, and
coordination with various athletic department units.
2.
The budget process and management; staff training materials; sport-specific manuals and
operations guides.
3.
Relationships with various campus entities involved in the successful presentation of an event.
These include but are not limited to parking, police, facilities, landcare, alumni association,
president’s office.
Internship: Athletic Facilities -- Mariucci and Ridder Arenas

Internship Description:
You will be supervised by the Mariucci and Ridder Arena Manager. You will have an initial period of
observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will happen on a daily basis. You are expected
to ask for assistance when needed. The Mariucci and Ridder Arena Manager will mentor this
internship. A general description of the internship opportunity is as follows:

You will be supervised by the Manager of Williams Arena and the Sports Pavilion. You will have an initial
period of observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will happen on a daily basis. You are
expected to ask for assistance when needed. The Manager of Williams Arena and the Sports Pavilion will
mentor this internship. A general description of the internship opportunity is as follows:
Receive “hands on” learning experiences with:
1.
Event Conversions – Williams Arena and the Sports Pavilion is home to six Gopher Sports programs
plus our spirit squad programs.
2.
Hiring, scheduling and working with part-time staff made up of nearly 25 students.
3.
Custodial spaces.
4.
Special events hosted at Williams Arena and the Sports Pavilion – MSHSL events, Robotics, Black
History Day, etc.
5.
Facility improvement projects.
Internship: GGF Annual Fund – Annual Giving Program
Supervisor:

The Director of Annual Fund and Associate Director of the Annual Fund will mentor this internship. A general
description of the internship opportunity is as follows:
Receiving “hands on” learning experiences with:

Strategic Development of GGF Annual Fund:
a. Annual fund calendar.
b. Strategic development and fulfillment of the annual fund program including seat related giving,
donor benefits, donor parking, stewardship and events.
c. Annual giving program including deadlines, benefit levels, preferred seating and scholarship needs.
d. Research and purchasing of donor benefits.
2.
Gift and Database Management:
a. Donor gifts.
b. Monthly reports on giving and produce acknowledgements.
c. Donor system in Audience View.
d. Correspondence with Foundation on donor gifts, reports and inquiries.
e. Donor giving reports.
3.
Customer Service:
a. Assist in handling of donor questions, concerns and request.

Internship Description:
You will be supervised by the Director of Annual Fund. You will have an initial period of observation, followed by
supervision as needed. Review will happen on a daily basis. You are expected to ask for assistance when needed.
The Director of Annual Fund and Associate Director of the Annual Fund will mentor this internship. A general
description of the internship opportunity is as follows:
Receiving “hands on” learning experiences with:
1. Branding and Communication of GGF:
a. Development, planning and execution of our GGF brand, mission and goals.
b. The GGF website for all development areas.
c. Communication pieces including but not limited to invitations, letters, web content and donor
bios.
d. Concept design for annual fund brochure and other communication materials for the GGF.
2.
Strategic Development of GGF Annual Fund:
a. The strategic development and fulfillment of the annual fund program including seat related
giving, donor benefits, donor parking, stewardship and events.
b. Gain knowledge of annual giving program including giving deadlines, benefit levels, preferred
seating and scholarship needs.
3.
Customer Service:
a. Serve as initial contact for GGF phone line.
b. Donor questions, concerns and request.
4.
Leadership & Training:

of the internship opportunity is as follows:

1. Major Gift solicitation for the department, in particular with Major Gifts as well as the marketing of
Athletic Development.
2. Capital project planning and implementation for the department.
3. Donor customer service, cultivation and stewardship.
4. Strategic development of the Major Gift program, including Planned Giving, Capital Campaigns,
Endowments.
5. Development of the GGF Marketing Strategy.
6. Correspondence to Major Gift contributors.
7. Donor request and fulfillment.
8. Donor communications.
9. Relationships/cultivation/stewardship of donors.

Strategic development of the Major Gifts program, including Planned Giving, Capital Campaigns,

Development of the Planned Giving Strategy for Athletics.
Correspondence to Major Gift contributors to Athletics.
Donor request and fulfillment.
Donor communications.

Internship: Information Technology -- Audio Visual Event
Supervisor:
Marty Bussman, Audio/Video Specialist
Anticipated Start Date: 6/18/2012
Stipend: $1000/month

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree

Bachelor's degree in a related field and significant knowledge and experience with audio-visual
technology.
Relevant experience in a customer driven environment.
Knowledge of:
Setting up and supporting audio-visual equipment.

Zoned sound systems
TV and video distribution systems

Internship Description:
You will be supervised by the Audio/Video Specialist. You will have an initial period of observation,
followed by supervision as needed. Review will happen on a daily basis. You are expected to ask for
assistance when needed. The Audio/Video Specialist will mentor this internship. A general description
of the internship opportunity is as follows:
Receive “hands on” learning experiences with:
1. Weekly meetings with students and event coordinators to review needs and schedule of events.
2. AV support for both athletics and premium events; including but not limited to Football,
Basketball, Hockey, Career Fairs, Expo’s, Trade Shows, Weddings and Receptions.
3. Support for events.
4. Event AV needs, planning, scheduling and support.
5. Supporting documentation.
Internship : Information Technology -- Programming
Supervisor:
Jon Marthaler, Assistant Director, Application Development Team Lead
Anticipated Start Date: 6/18/2012
Stipend: $1000/month
Term: 12 months
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree
Knowledge of:
Developing software, especially web-based software.
Core web standards, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Database-driven software
Familiarity in Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a related field
Knowledge of:
Developing in PHP
SQL and MySQL.
Familiarity with web server administration, including Apache.
Internship Description:
You will be supervised by the Assistant Director, Application Development Team Lead. You will have an
initial period of observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will happen on a daily basis.
You are expected to ask for assistance when needed. The Assistant Director, Application Development
Team Lead will mentor this internship. A general description of the internship opportunity is as follows:
Receive “hands on” learning experiences with:
1. Application development and maintenance of web based applications.
2. Project management related to schedule and scope of assignments.
3. Application testing and quality control process.
4. Project expectations and deliverables.
5. Documentation and training materials.
Internship: Marketing Coordinator

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in sports marketing, event marketing, and/or promotions, specifically with a University or
professional sports team
Internship Description:
You will be supervised by the Assistant Director of Marketing. You will have an initial period of
observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will happen on a daily basis. You are expected
to ask for assistance when needed. The Assistant Director of Marketing and Director of Marketing will
mentor this internship. A general description of the internship opportunity is as follows:
Receive “hands on” learning experiences with:
1. Strategic marketing and promotional planning for sports programs.
2. Collaborating with affiliated groups including booster clubs, alumni, student groups and other
University contacts to help generate awareness and attendance for assigned sports.
3. Creating great fan experiences though promotions, music, Band, Goldy, and other performance
groups that reinforce University of Minnesota “collegiate” brand.
4. Marketing activities on football game days and other special events.
Internship: Student-Athlete Affairs
Supervisor:

Anticipated Start Date: 8/13/2012

Experience in: Intercollegiate Athletics working with student-athletes
Internship Description:
You will be supervised by the Director, Student-Athlete Affairs. You will have an initial period of
observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will happen on a daily basis. You are expected
to ask for assistance when needed. The Director will mentor this internship. A general description of
the internship opportunity is as follows:
Receive “hands on” learning experiences with:
1. Utilizing campus and community resources to improve students' professional knowledge to foster
career exploration and self-reliance.
2. Addressing the needs of a diverse student-athlete population and promote personal and
professional growth through interactive programming, educational sessions, and leadership
development.
3. Collaborating with internal and external constituents, coaches and administrators, and on-campus
offices to create a positive and supportive environment for empowerment and overall enrichment
of the student-athlete experience.
4. The coordination of outreach events for the M.A.G.I.C. Program for all 25 athletic programs for
campus and community engagement.

Chad Rasmussen – Associate Director of Ticketing
Anticipated Start Date: 6/18/2012

Term: 12 months

Bachelor's degree
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management or business management.
Experience in working in a college athletic department or other ticketing organizations.
Internship Description:
You will be supervised by the Associate Director of Ticketing. You will have an initial period of
observation, followed by supervision as needed. Review will happen on a daily basis. You are expected
to ask for assistance when needed. All ticket managers will mentor this internship. A general
description of the internship opportunity is as follows:
Receive “hands on” learning experiences with:
1.
Daily operation of the Phone Bank and accounting areas.
2.
Phone Bank student workers.
3.
Working with customer service representatives to answer questions, handle “escalated” customer
complaints.
4.
Daily batching and processing of ticket orders for all sports.
5.
Game Day preparation – which includes fulfilling staffing assignments and organizing player pass lists.
6.
Ticket office operations on game day.
7.
Event reconciliation – which includes auditing, reporting and daily balancing from window sales.
8.
Configuring ticket specials with the marketing department.
9.
Season parking passes for Football, Men’s Basketball and Men’s Hockey.
