MASTER COURSE SYLLABUS Date: March 2002 Course Number: MGT 631 Course Title: Strategic Human Resource Management in a Technological Environment Instructor(s): Gramm, Rogers, Sherman, Weatherly Typical Textbook: Baron, Strategic Human Resources, John Wiley & Sons, most recent edition Catalog Description: Examines the major functions of human resource management -- planning, staffing, compliance with laws regulating employment relations, training and development, compensation, employee relations, and union-management relations -- from a strategic perspective. Particular attention given to the special challenges faced by high technology firms and organizations experiencing or contemplating technological change. Prerequisites: MGT 600 or equivalent Course Objectives: To introduce students to the major activities involved in managing an organization’s human resources ─ strategic planning, staffing, training and development, employee and union relations, compliance with laws governing employer-employee relations, and compensation. Primarily take the perspective of the general manager rather than that of the human resource management specialist. This means we will focus on strategic considerations — how the management of an organization’s human resources can help an organization meet its organizational objectives and competitive challenges — rather than such minutiae as the techniques for job evaluation, performance evaluation, or the design of different types of benefit packages. Consider the special challenges to effective human resource management faced by high technology organizations, organizations experiencing or contemplating technological change, and organizations employing knowledge workers, including workers in high technology occupations. o help manager Ethics: This course will cover the Society for Human Resource Management’s “Code of Ethical and Professional Standards in Human Resource Management.” Discussions of ethical considerations and dilemmas that managers may face in carrying out human resource management functions. Environment: Diversity: Global Issues: Technology: Not applicable This course will provide substantial coverage of the implications of demographic diversity for the management of an organization’s human resources. The course will include coverage of the implications of diversity in domestic and global labor markets for strategic human resource management. It also will cover U.S. law protecting various groups against discrimination in employment. Additionally, it will consider the use of human resource management practices to attract, develop, and retain a diverse and productive labor force for the organization. This course will cover the implications of the scope of labor markets and product markets for effective human resource management, issues related to international staffing, and employment law issues pertaining to global organizations. Considers the special challenges to strategic human resource management in high tech organizations, in firms experiencing technological change, and firms employing knowledge workers, including workers in high technology occupations.
