SCOPE
This Bulletin has been prepared to assist in the choice of the proper interface standard
for use between Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) and Data Circuit-Terminating
Equipment (DCE). The Bulletin provides two tables which show the available TIA
interface standards.

NORMATIVE REFERENCES
The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text,
constitute provisions of this Bulletin. At the time of publication, the editions indicated
were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on
this Bulletin are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent
editions of the standards indicated below. ANSI and TIA maintain registers of currently
valid national standards published by them.

DESCRIPTION
This Bulletin provides a tabular summary of the available standards which define the
interface between DTEs and DCEs. The Bulletin is intended to help the user select the
proper Standard to use for a particular application.
Table 1 lists the Interface Standards which provide the functional and mechanical
interfaces.
This table lists the connector, maximum data rate, the electrical
TSB-54-B
characteristics used, applicability to synchronous and/or asynchronous interfaces, the
interchange circuits supported (listed by ITU-T V.24 number) and the compatible
International Standards or Recommendations for each interface standard.
Table 2 lists the Electrical Characteristics Standards which are specified in Table 1. The
table lists the maximum data rate specified, mode of operation, number of generators
and receivers per interchange circuit, the compatible International Standards or
Recommendations and the TIA interface standards which make use of the electrical
characteristic standard.
