KILOGRAMS AND GRAMS (PART 2) You already know how to change between Kilograms and Grams. There are 1000 grams in every kilogram: 1kg = 1000g 2kg = 2000g 1kg 800g = 1800g 5kg 525g = 5525g If we use decimal numbers we can also write weights like these in kilograms only. Follow these examples: 1575 = 1kg 575g = 1.575kg Every 1000g is shown as a whole kilogram to the left of the decimal point. 7579g = 7kg 579g = 7.579g The remaining grams (under 1000) are shown as parts of a kilogram using decimal numbers. 3508g 575g 3kg 508g = = 575g = = 3.508kg 0.575kg When the amount is not over 1000g then a whole kilogram cannot be shown. When this happens we show there are no whole kg with a zero. 999g 999g = = Can you see what is happening? Every 1000g is shown as a whole kilogram. Every 100g is shown as Every 10g is shown as f lex i p Every 1g is shown as 1 10 1 100 1 1000 or 0.1 of a kilogram. or 0.01 of a kilogram. or 0.001 of a kilogram. ac k s 1 0.999kg A. Try these yourself 1) 5765 g = 5 kg 765 g = ......... . ....................... kg 2) 2808 g = 2 kg 808 g = ......... . ...................... kg 3) 4075 g = 4 kg 75 g = ......... . ....................... kg 4) 11555 g = 11 kg 555 g = ......... . ....................... kg 5) 17595 g = 17 kg 595 g = ......... . ...................... kg 6) 605 g = ......... . ...................... kg 7) 87g = ......... . ...................... kg You can use the calculator to check your answers. If you have a weight in grams then you can find it in kilograms by DIVIDING BY 1000 (because 1000g = 1kg) So 2453g 1000 = 2.453kg 5683g 1000 = 5.683kg B. Now try these, changing from kilograms to grams. 1) 1.756 kg = ...................... g 2) 2.999 kg = ...................... g 3) 7.552 kg = ...................... g 4) 13.098 kg = ...................... g 5) 18.224 kg = ...................... g 6) 0.375 kg ...................... g = You can use the calculator to check your answers. If you have a weight in kilograms then you can find it in grams by MULTIPLYING BY 1000 (because 1000g = 1kg) So 2.333kg x 1000 = 2333g 6.858kg x 1000 = 6858g 0.095kg x 1000 = 95g Look at these ones that have been done for you. This time they include UNNECESSARY ZEROS. (If you have not come across these before then look at the work sheet "Unnecessary Zeros" in the Decimals support pack.) 2570 g = 2.57 kg The 2000g change to whole kilograms. The remaining grams are written as a decimal. We can get rid of the last 0 as it is unnecessary. 3080 g = 3.08 kg The 3000g change to whole kilograms. The remaining grams are written as a decimal. We can get rid of the last 0 as it is unnecessary, but we need to include the zero after the decimal point as it is important for the place value (it shows that there are no 100g or 1/10 kg). 2900g = 2.9kg The 2000g change to whole kilograms. The remaining grams are written as a decimal. We can get rid of the 0's following the number as they are unnecessary. Check these on a calculator. This automatically gets rid of the unnecessary zeros. C. Now try these. 1) Ellen goes to the market. She buys 1.37kg of apples, 5.25kg potatoes, 1.75kg carrots and 0.975kg of oranges. Can you change these weights to grams? 2) Moya works on the delicatessen counter of a local supermarket. Change these weights from kg to g.
