1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Specialist, Classroom Computer, supports networked computers and various mobile computing
devices in classrooms and other instructional spaces, as well as check-out equipment. The primary
responsibility of this position is to maintain a high level of reliability in these computers as failures
directly impact the teaching and learning process. The position also performs some training of faculty
and students in the use of these computers and computing devices. The position reports to the
Manager of Instructional Technology.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide
enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage

70% - Classroom Computing and Software Maintenance
 Completes all elements of specification, imaging, and deployment of classroom/instructional
computing
 Manages departmental Active Directory organizational unit (OU) and minor group policies and
scripting
 Provides primary and secondary desktop support and remote maintenance for computers in
classrooms, mobile carts, and other instructional spaces
 Manages software acquisition, licensing and installs for classroom technology
 Works with department and Information Technology staff to ensure that computers in
classrooms work effectively on the campus network and are maintained in conjunction with
campus-wide support initiatives, such Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager
(SCCM)
15% - Student Supervision
 Hires, trains, schedules, and supervises Classroom Services’ student computer technicians
 Deploys students to troubleshoot computing problems in classrooms
15% - Organization and Administration
 Provides policy guidance to the Manager of Instructional Technology with respect to the use of
computing technology for instructional applications
 Organizes online documentation and manuals to support instructional technology
 Conducts training for faculty, teaching assistants, and students in the effective use of
computers for instructional applications
 Manages inventory and surplus operations for Classroom Services
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
Decisions about classroom technology policies, selection of systems and equipment, classroom
computing images and software, etc. are made in collaboration with, but under direction of, the
Manager of Instructional Technology and Director of Teaching and Learning Technologies, adhering
to IT computing and networking standards and reflecting the direction established by the university
administration. The Classroom Computer Specialist works independently to implement decisions, to

maintain functional and effective computing technology, and to train and deploy students to
troubleshoot problems. The position is responsible for day-to-day decisions concerning maintenance
of equipment and software and has the freedom to make on-the-spot decisions to assure proper
functioning of equipment within established protocols.
Impact:
Increasingly, technology is integral to the classroom and instruction is developed to adopt available
technology. Thus, decisions have a campus wide impact. Poor performance by the Classroom
Computer Specialist results in failure of technology, directly impacting the teaching and learning
experience, increasing faculty and student frustration, and possibly creating a reluctance to employ
technology in future course development.

communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and
innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
Knowledge:
 Windows and iOS operating systems and hardware
 Direct and remote support, maintenance and management of computers and mobile
computing devices
 Imaging, deployment and securing of computers in a networked environment
 Active Directory, local and OU Group Policies and SCCM
 SQL, PHP, ASP and NET
 Instructional computing in a higher education environment
Skills:
 Strong verbal and written communication
 Supervision of student workers, including training and motivating
 Troubleshooting technical computer related issues, including hardware, software, operating
system and network
 Interpersonal/human relations skills
 Use and support of Windows and Mac-based computing applications and media
Ability to:
 Work collaboratively with faculty, technical staff and TLT colleagues
 Work independently and achieve results with minimal supervision, yet be productive within a
service-oriented team environment
 Train faculty and students in the use of computer technology
 Effectively use and advise on the use of computing technology in instructional settings
 Create, deploy and manage comprehensive hard-drive images, using technology such as
Symantec Ghost, SCCM, Dell KACE or similar technologies
