Starbucks is currently the largest coffeehouse company in the world. Though many people
know
who Howard Schultz is (he is the well-known CEO of Starbucks), only a few people know who the real
founders of Starbucks are. On March 30, 1971, English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegl,
and writer Gordon Bowker together established the first Starbucks in Seattle, Washington. These three
partners were inspired and encouraged by their friend and entrepreneur Alfred Peet to sell high-quality
coffee beans and equipment. As for the name of their shop, it was taken from Moby-Dick, a famous
novel written by American writer Herman Melville.
During the first four years, the first Starbucks was located at 2000 Western Avenue, and then it was
relocated to 1912 Pike Place in 1975, where it still remains to this day. During the first year of operation,
Peet supplied green coffee beans to them, and then they began buying directly from growers.
It was in 1982 that entrepreneur Howard Schultz joined the company as Director of Retail
Operations and Marketing. After he took a short trip to Milan, Italy, he advised the founders that the
company should sell coffee and espresso drinks in addition to coffee beans. However, the owners didn’t
accept this idea because they believed that getting into the beverage business would distract the
company from its primary focus. At that time, the owners thought that coffee was something to be

prepared in the home, not in a store. After knowing his suggestion was rejected and feeling certain that
selling pre-made drinks would be profitable, Schultz decided to leave and start the Il Giornale coffee
bar chain in April 1986. One year later, the owners sold the Starbucks chain to Schultz’s Il Giornale.
Then, Schultz rebranded the Il Giornale outlets as Starbucks and rapidly started to expand its business.
