Gerda, the heroine (F). She is a brave and determined girl whose kind, caring love is great enough to defeat the Snow Queen. She needs to show charm, otherwise not everyone would want to help her. Kai, (M). A typical young man sure he can do anything even if he has no experience. As the story unfolds he becomes more under the Snow Queen’s control. Snow Queen, (F). She is icy and ethereal. She has no heart and her actions reflect her control of the land and all within it. Borg, (M). He is a troll and therefore very hairy. Sometimes you see that he has a mind of his own and that the Snow Queen’s control is not absolute. Caw, (M /F). He is one half of the crow partnership. He is very important is his own estimation but also brave. He needs the audience to warm towards him and really like him. Cora, (F). She is the female half of the crow partnership. She is the ‘brains’ of the two. She has royal connections whereas Caw appears fancy free. Private Idle and Private Simple, (M). They are the Palace Guards whose task it is to defend the Princess’s Palace, but they are not very effective. They are a comedy duo. Princess Rietta, (F). She is in charge of her principality, clever and charming. She is kind and generous. Prince Henri, (M). He is a match for Princess Rietta. He has his finger on the pulse of the principality. Feolin, the Reindeer (M/F). He is a dignified character but brave and determined to do his best for Gerda. He is played as a two legged character by one actor, although costumed as a reindeer. Laddich, the snow man (M/F). Quite lonely but always determined to be optimistic. This character wears a snowman costume and does movement/dance costume permitting, and is a speaking/singing part. Red Beard, the Chief Robber (M). A rough and tough character, he has trouble with his robber band; they are not the best in the world. Hanni, the Chief Robber’s daughter (F). She knows what she wants and gets what she wants from her father. She recognises Gerda’s bravery and kind heart. Robber Band, (M/F). These are robber lads and lasses who are always hungry as they are not very good at robbery and have lost a fair number of the band through their clumsy ineptitude. Towns Folk. *Some need to be able to ‘ice skate’ i.e. roller skate proficiently, as they have a spectacular part in the opening scenes. You will need to bring your roller skates, which must have stoppers, to the audition. Need to be able to sing even while skating. Other Towns Folk are also needed. Chorus of Courtiers. Fuller details of the above characters are posted in the foyer of the BHT. We look forward to seeing you at the auditions in September. Chris.
