Dead Poets Society - Summary of chapters 1 and 2 Chapter 1: The story is about a prepatory school in America called Welton Academy, a private old boys elite school looking like a church, set in 1959. The school is near the remote hills of Vermont and was founded in 1859. All new pupils are assembled in the school hall. The headmaster (Dean Nolan) gives a speech about the four pillars of the school: tradition, honor, discipline and excellence. Over 75 percent of the students go to Ivy league schools every year. After the speech, Mr. Nolan presents the new English teacher: Mr. Keating There is also a new student at Welton named Todd Anderson whose brother was one of the best at Welton. The headmaster has a brief conversation with Todd, his parents and with Neil including his father, Mr. Perry. Chapter 2: Neil Perry is a student at Welton Academy. His clique includes Charlie Dalton, Knox Overstreet, Steven Meeks, Richard Cameron and Pitts. Knox,Neil,Charlie,Todd and Richard are ordered to follow Dr. Hager to the office of Mr. Nolan. There Mr. Nolan tells them which extracurricular activities they have to do. Todd is not satisfied with his activities. He wants to do rowing, but Mr. Nolan wants him to play soccer. In addition, Neil gets a room with Todd. The other students annoy Todd by calling him a “stiff” for example. All the pupils are in Neil‘s room talking. Then Mr. Perry comes into the room.
