The course centers its study on the roots and development of the Philippines, from its earliest known beginning up to the present, with special emphasis on the socio-historical and political perspectives of the country. It attempts to link the present to the past by considering the pageant of events that have shaped the nation’s course and provide the students a better view of the direction it takes toward the future. It also covers a broad approach in the understanding of the role of the Philippines in the international community even as it is a multi-cultured, multi-lingual, multiracial and multi-religious nation. HIST 126 CONTEMPORARY & MODERN HISTORY OF THE PHILIPPINES – 3 units. The course covers selected aspects of the recent past with an emphasis on periods such as the United States administration, the Commonwealth, the Japanese occupation, and the early decades of the third Republic or topical subjects like economics, politics, social and cultural life. HIST 130 INTRODUCTION TO ASIAN CIVILIZATION – 3 units. This is a course on the civilization of India, china, and Japan. It includes the geographical and socio-historical settings of these civilizations, Western encroachments and Asian responses. Focus is on the traditional elements of these civilizations, the connective elements that held these civilizations together, and their relation to the world history. HIST 135 PHILIPPINE NATIONALISM – 3 units. This course focuses on the evolution and expression of nationalism from the early Spanish period to the present. Case studies of nationalism movements are examined. HIST 154 CONTEMPORARY CHINA, JAPAN, & INDIA – 3 units. The course deals with history and dynamics of the Chinese Revolution and current issues in the social and political development of the People’s Republic of China in the context of regional and global realities. HIST 160 HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA – 3 units. A general survey of the beginnings of the United States from the time of the settlements to the civil war, the unification of the nation to the present. The cursory survey will only highlight the historical events which led the nation into what it is now. HIST 178 WORLD HISTORY – 3 units. The study includes the social, political, economic, religious and intellectual movements of the modern world from the close of the 15th century to the present. Emphasis is on outstanding world events, the European expansion and influence, the two world wars, the League of Nations and the United States. HIST 165 ASEAN STATES & THE THIRD WORLD – 3 units. A general survey of the history of the developing countries of contemporary times is the scope of the course. Because of the everincreasing demand by industrial nations of temperate lands for the products to tropical Africa, and the vast changes taking place in the “black continent” in recent years. Emphasis shall be on Africa. This course will unravel to the history of students the important role that Africa is playing in the world. It will give them a chance to study further and evaluate the changing face of Africa today. HIST 180 ANCIENT MEDIEVAL & MODERN EUROPE – 3 units. The course traces the beginning of history and to point out the various roles played by the Near East as well as Greece and Rome in making the world what it is now. It also deals with the emergence of new nations from the time of the renaissance to the present. HIST 181 HISTORY OF AFRICA – 3 units. HIST 183 WORLD GEOGRAPHY – 3 units. This is a study of the characteristics of particular places on the earth’s surface. It is concerned with the arrangement of things that distinguishes one area from another. It will not only cover the physical but also the social, political, and economic aspects of geography with the emphasis on the Philippines. HIST 190 REGIONAL AND LOCAL HISTORY – 3 units.
