CHORAL ENSEMBLE I & II – 1 unit each. Participation in choir/chorus class.

INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC THEORY – 4 units. A course for mastering the
interpretation of musical symbols and terms, and the translation of musical sounds into notation. It aims at
developing not only musical literacy, but also understanding musical concepts. Includes the study of the
basic elements of music, keys, key signatures, scales, intervals, and triads, note values, rhythmic patterns
and meters. May be waived upon passing the qualifying exams for basic theory. Prerequisite to Music
Theory I.
MUTH 120 & 121 MUSIC THEORY I & II – 4 units each. A study of the melodic and harmonic
structures in the major and minor scales including the different modal scales. Emphasis on four-part
writing and study of non-harmonic tones. Includes exercises in dictation, harmonic analysis, solfege, sight
singing, keyboard theory and creative writing.
MUHL 122 & 123 MUSIC HISTORY & LITERATURE I & II – 3 units each. This is a study of
important characteristics, developments, forms, composers and literature from classical to contemporary
periods with listening experiences.

PHILIPPINE MUSIC – 2 units. Survey of the music of upland peoples, lowland
peoples and Islamic communities. Includes vocal and instrumental music and their uses and functions.

ASIAN MUSIC – 2 units. Survey of the music of Southeast Asian Cultures. Includes
vocal and instrumental music and their uses and functions.

historical foundations of music education. Includes Seventh-Day Adventist Philosophy of Music

SAFETY EDUCATION AND FIRST AID This course aims to provide skills
information for immediate care of injured persons with special attention given to athletic injuries. It
provides experience in bandaging, splinting, artificial respiration and massage.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH Deals with effective methods of excretes disposal,
collection and disposal of refuse: fly, mosquito and rodent control and provision of safe water supply.
This should be discussed in their relation to the prevention and effective control of community disease.

SCHOOL HEALTH AND APPLIED NUTRITION The study of problems of
school age children, to finds way by which the school can help to protect and improved the health of
children. It also includes the study of the requirements of the body for energy, proteins, vitamins and

PHILIPPINE MUSIC – 2 units. This deals with the history and development of
Philippine music instruments and composers and their contribution to the progress of music in the country.

objectives, principles, contents, methods, and materials in secondary school music teaching. Prerequisite:
Piano preparatory course and Music Theory.
