E-mail: mcamacho@deltacollege.edu Extension: 5271 Goals and objectives: Spanish 3 is a fourth semester language course designed to develop communicative proficiency in listening, reading, speaking and writing in Spanish. To help students develop functional fluency, Spanish 3 is entirely conducted in Spanish. The course includes interpretation and analysis of the cultures of Hispanic countries and an introduction to the study of literary texts in Spanish. At the completion of the course you will be able to carry on conversations in a culturally appropriate manner, understand written and spoken Spanish dealing with different aspects of Hispanic culture and communicate in writing your opinions about the topics treated in our textbook. However, these objectives can only be realized through your active participation, both in and out of the class. Required Materials: - Textbook: Mundo 21. Third edition. By Samaniego, Rojas, Ohara y Alarcón. Houghton and Mifflin Company. - Cuaderno de Actividades Mundo 21. - Audio Program. Mundo 21. 2 Audio tapes or CDs. Optional Material: - 501 Spanish Verbs - Spanish/English Dictionary - Spanish only Dictionary 1 Material Description: Textbook. Mundo 21: For in class use and daily study. Cuaderno de Actividades. Mundo 21 : For daily at-home practice to be completed as soon as possible after class. I will grade your Manual at the end of each unit. You need to complete all the activities in the assigned chapters in a timely manner to get credit for them. Audio tapes or CDs: Coordinated with the Cuaderno de Actividades “A escuchar” section, the Audio Program provides focused listening practice that further develops pronunciation and speaking skills. Remember that I will be checking all the activities in your Activities Manual (including the “A escuchar” section ) at the end of each unit. Online Learning Center to accompany Mundo 21 Includes maps, web-related activities, review quizzes, lesson-based self-tests and links to websites through the Spanish speaking world. The web site may be accessed through http://college.hmco.com. How to approach each lesson: 1. Always begin with the assigned sections in the Textbook before coming to class. Prepare for them so you can discuss, ask questions and participate. Do any assigned homework related to them. 2. After the class review the new materials and study the assigned section for the following day. Then, go to the Cuaderno de Actividades. Complete all the activities in the assigned section for the day and, finally, go back over them with a different colored pen and correct your work using the Answer Key. Some of these activities will require the lab tapes. After you complete the assigned section in your Cuaderno de Actividades move on to the next day assigned sections in your textbook to be prepared for your next class. 3. Finally, explore the extra stuff that will make this language fun and interactive – the Media center CD ROMs, the Mundo 21 online learning center, other Spanish web sites, etc. 2 Evaluation: - 3 Chapter Exams (10 x 3 chapter exams.) - 4 Compositions (5 x 4 compositions) - Final Exam - Class Participation - Presentations - Manual de Actividades, Homework 30% 20% 15% 10% 10% 15% Grade Cutoffs: 90%-100% 80%-89% 70%-79% 60% to 69% below 60% =A =B =C =D =F Class participation Class attendance and regular participation are essential to succeed in this class. Attendance is essential in learning a language. Five semester absences are allowed. However, more than five absences will affect your participation grade. And remember that, in accordance with college policy, you can be dropped for excessive absence (more than 15 semester absences). Academic Honesty: If a student is discovered cheating the instructor has the right to cancel that exam or assignment for everyone involved in the incident. Extra Credit: To get extra credit you can choose to do a class presentation on a cultural topic of your choice in addition to the one required. You can also watch 5 Spanish speaking films and write a two pages long essay per film. Ask me for the assignment if you are interested in doing it. You will receive extra credit points, not percentages. 3 Tips: - - - Come to class every day and be as well prepared as possible. Keep up with the exercises in the Cuaderno de Actividades. Try to do the assigned section on a daily basis. Do the exercises without referring to the answer key and then correct your answers against the key using a different color pen. If you do not understand why you got it wrong, mark it and don’t forget to ask me in class. Don´t hesitate to ask questions in, before, or after class and visit me during office hours. Make friends with your classmates and exchange phone numbers. Learning Spanish will be more fun and you will have somebody to help you catch up if you have to miss a class.
