Goals and objectives:
Spanish 3 is a fourth semester language course designed to develop communicative
proficiency in listening, reading, speaking and writing in Spanish. To help students
develop functional fluency, Spanish 3 is entirely conducted in Spanish. The course
includes interpretation and analysis of the cultures of Hispanic countries and an
introduction to the study of literary texts in Spanish. At the completion of the course you
will be able to carry on conversations in a culturally appropriate manner, understand
written and spoken Spanish dealing with different aspects of Hispanic culture and
communicate in writing your opinions about the topics treated in our textbook. However,
these objectives can only be realized through your active participation, both in and out of
the class.

Material Description:
Textbook. Mundo 21:
For in class use and daily study.
Cuaderno de Actividades. Mundo 21 :
For daily at-home practice to be completed as soon as possible after class. I will grade
your Manual at the end of each unit. You need to complete all the activities in the
assigned chapters in a timely manner to get credit for them.
Audio tapes or CDs:
Coordinated with the Cuaderno de Actividades “A escuchar” section, the Audio Program
provides focused listening practice that further develops pronunciation and speaking
skills. Remember that I will be checking all the activities in your Activities Manual
(including the “A escuchar” section ) at the end of each unit.
Online Learning Center to accompany Mundo 21
Includes maps, web-related activities, review quizzes, lesson-based self-tests and links to
websites through the Spanish speaking world. The web site may be accessed through
http://college.hmco.com.
How to approach each lesson:
1. Always begin with the assigned sections in the Textbook before coming to class.
Prepare for them so you can discuss, ask questions and participate. Do any
assigned homework related to them.
2. After the class review the new materials and study the assigned section for the
following day. Then, go to the Cuaderno de Actividades. Complete all the
activities in the assigned section for the day and, finally, go back over them with a
different colored pen and correct your work using the Answer Key. Some of these
activities will require the lab tapes. After you complete the assigned section in
your Cuaderno de Actividades move on to the next day assigned sections in your
textbook to be prepared for your next class.
3. Finally, explore the extra stuff that will make this language fun and interactive –
the Media center CD ROMs, the Mundo 21 online learning center, other Spanish
web sites, etc.

Class participation
Class attendance and regular participation are essential to succeed in this class.
Attendance is essential in learning a language. Five semester absences are allowed.
However, more than five absences will affect your participation grade. And
remember that, in accordance with college policy, you can be dropped for excessive
absence (more than 15 semester absences).
Academic Honesty:
If a student is discovered cheating the instructor has the right to cancel that exam or
assignment for everyone involved in the incident.
Extra Credit:
To get extra credit you can choose to do a class presentation on a cultural topic of
your choice in addition to the one required. You can also watch 5 Spanish speaking
films and write a two pages long essay per film. Ask me for the assignment if you are
interested in doing it. You will receive extra credit points, not percentages.

Tips:
-
-
-
Come to class every day and be as well prepared as possible.
Keep up with the exercises in the Cuaderno de Actividades. Try to do the
assigned section on a daily basis. Do the exercises without referring to the answer
key and then correct your answers against the key using a different color pen. If
you do not understand why you got it wrong, mark it and don’t forget to ask me in
class.
Don´t hesitate to ask questions in, before, or after class and visit me during office
hours.
Make friends with your classmates and exchange phone numbers. Learning
Spanish will be more fun and you will have somebody to help you catch up if you
have to miss a class.
Explore radio, T.V., music, movies, and magazines in Spanish, try to select topics
that interest you, and enjoy learning Spanish.
¡Bienvenidos a clase y muy buena suerte!
