Admission of Full-Fee Paying Candidates to
Initial Teacher Preparation Programmes
July 2016 Intake
Postgraduate Diploma in Education
The National Institute of Education will be admitting full-fee paying candidates to the following initial teacherpreparation programmes commencing in July 2016:
(a) Postgraduate Diploma in Education (1 year)
(b) Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Physical Education) (2 years)
The entry requirements for the programmes concerned are enclosed. Candidates must satisfy the entry
requirements stipulated and pay full tuition fees as advised by NIE at the time of admission. As a full-fee paying
candidate, there will not be a requirement to serve a period of bond with the Ministry of Education (Singapore)
after graduation.
Below are further details of the programme.

Programme Entry Requirements
To be considered for admission, applicants should have at least a degree from the Nanyang Technological
University, the National University of Singapore or other universities whose degrees are acceptable to the
education service of Singapore.
Other special requirements include the following:

GCE ‘O’ Level passes in English, Mathematics and any Science Subject for teaching general subjects at
the primary school level,

an interest and ability in Physical Education and sports as well as a pass in the Physical Proficiency Test
to teach Physical Education;

a five-minute audition for applicants shortlisted to teach Music. The audition will include at least one of the
following: performance of prepared pieces on first and/or second instruments; sight reading on first
instrument; sight singing; harmonising a simple melody on first/second instrument; or improvising a simple
piece;

an art-focused interview for applicants shortlisted to teach Art.
Other Entry Requirements
a) Pass in Chinese/Malay/Tamil Language Entrance Proficiency Test for applicants applying to read
Chinese/Malay/Tamil Language (if exemption criteria are not met. Refer to details on RELC’s website:
http://www.relc.org.sg/eb/ept/).
b) Pass in Physical Proficiency Test if the intention is to teach Physical Education.
c) Any other tests as required by NIE.
d) Candidates may be subjected to Content Upgrading courses, as required by NIE.

English Proficiency Requirements
Programmes are conducted in English. All applicants are required to be able to follow the programmes
conducted in the English medium. Applicants who do not meet the exemption criteria shown below would be
required to show proof of their proficiency in English Language by submitting one of the following English
Language Test results:
(a) International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least band 6 (Academic Version); or
(b) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 550 (PBT) or 80 (iBT); or
(c) Pass in the English Language Entrance Proficiency Test administered by the Ministry of Education
Exemption Criteria

Honours degree/Pass with merit/Pass degree graduates/Final year undergraduates with English
Language or English Literature as the major Subject; OR
Applicants who scored at least a Grade B3 in General Paper (English)/Grade B in H1 General
Paper/Grade B in H2 knowledge and Inquiry at the GCE ‘A’ Level Examination; OR
Applicants who scored at least a Grade B3 in English Language (EL1) at the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination;
OR
Applicants who scored at least a Grade B3 in English Paper 121, 1120 or 1119 at SPM; OR
Applicants who scored at least a Grade 5 in English at the International Baccalaureate Examination; OR
Applicants who scored at least an overall cap of 3.5 in English Language in the NUS High School
Diploma.






Choice of Teaching Subjects
Student teachers will specialise in teaching at the primary, secondary or junior college level.
Note:
 The programme being applied in this application form will only be conducted if there are sufficient
candidates for the programme.
 The Office of Teacher Education (OTE) reserves the right to assign a different teaching subject to you if
the teaching subject you choose has a low number of takers.
Teaching Subjects for PGDE (Primary)
The General PGDE (Primary) track prepares student teachers to teach 3 primary school subjects. Apart from
the General track, there are specialisation tracks in the teaching of Chinese/Malay/Tamil Language, Art or
Music.
The following are PGDE (Primary) teaching subjects:

Currently, the total annual tuition fees payable are as follows:

[Fees quoted are inclusive of GST and are accurate as at January 2016. Fees are subjected to revision by
the University. Other miscellaneous fees are payable.]
