Materials Heating Materials Name: Hadeel Armanazi Subject: science Title :Heating Materials Mentor Teacher: Rahaf Attaya Date taught 12 / 5 /2009 Grade: two Duration: 45 minutes, 3rd block Objectives: The student will be able to Predict what will happen to some materials when heating them . Carry out an investigation to conclude what will happen to following materials (ice cubes and chocolate) when heating them . Define the following scientific terms, solid ,liquid , heat, melt , by using their own words and the support of their mother tongue . Standard: 7.6 Know that many materials can be changed either temporarily or permanently by heating. 1.3 Make predictions about the outcome of an investigation. 1.2 Draw conclusions from observations and data. Materials: Transparent plastic bags, cubes of ice , chocolate pieces ,for teacher only : bowl of hot water , worksheets , flash cards Resources: 1. 2. 3. 4. Science scheme of work /changing materials/ grade 2 www.perasonpublishing.co.uk/education/samples ( some ideas ) CGP science book / Key stage One / Materials (worksheet) page 23 . The song at the end is from New star science – changing materials –page 16 Activating prior knowledge/ Warm up: Remind students of previous lesson . Ask them to explain the meaning of flexible materials . Remind them how they carried out an investigation to see how we can change the shape of some materials temporally or permanently . Tell students today we will carry out an investigation to answer the following question ( what will happen to chocolate and ice when heating them ? Allow each pair to talk and predict what might happen . 1 Teaching strategy Show students a cube of ice . Ask them " Can you catch this cube ? Can we play with it ? yes. Write solid on the board and explain how solid means something we can hold in our hands .Encourage students to give more examples of solid objects (table, disks, pencils --) Show students a cup of orange juice . Ask them can we touch it? (yes) Can you throw it like a ball to your friend ? (No ) Write liquid in the board . Ask children to give more examples of liquids ( water , apple juice , milkshake --) Place flash cards of ( solid and liquid ) . Encourage students to read them aloud . Remind students of Today's question (what will happen to chocolate and ice cubes when heating them ? Divide the class into groups of three girls . Give each group two plastic bags ,one contains chocolate pieces ,the other one contains ice cubes .Give each group a worksheet 1 to write down their predictions and the conclusion . Tell students that we have to investigate those materials when heating them . Explain to the students how hot water is dangerous for their skin that’s why we have to find another way to heat those materials . Encourage them to think about other sources that give us heat . Ask students to rub their hands quickly . Ask them : What do you feel when you rub your hands quickly ?( Heat /hot) . Tell them that we will use the heat of our hands to investigate those materials. Ask each group to write down their prediction of what will happen to the chocolate and ice when rubbing it . Ask each group to start their investigation and to start rubbing the two plastic bags which contain materials . Encourage them to go back to the paper and draw what happened after applying the heat from their hands . Ask them to describe what happened to chocolate and ice. Introduce the verb melt to the students . Encourage students to conclude that " applying a heat on some materials can change it from solid into liquid like ice and chocolate when it is melted . 2 For safety reason , I will put chocolate and ice in real hot water bowl to show students how those two materials can be melted . Explain the worksheet page 23 . Students’ Activity: o Look and think of the description of ice cube as solid object and orange juice as liquid . o Give examples of solid and liquid materials . o Identify how hot water is dangerous for their skin. o Think about other sources of the heat . o Conclude that we can produce a heat when rubbing our hands together quickly . o Write down their predictions before rubbing the three plastic bags . o Carry out the investigation as group work . o Write down what happened after applying heat to the material . o Describe what happened to the chocolate and the ice in the plastic bags . o Observe the teacher while placing the three materials in real hot water bowl . o Individual worksheet page 23 . Closure: Ask students to summarize what they have learnt today . Ask them to list the new scientific terms for today : heat – melt – liquid and solid and what did they discover in today's lesson. Encourage students to repeat the terms while pointing at the flash cards on the board . Sing the song of chocolate and encourage students to think about its meaning . Lesson Extension and/or Modification: Lesson extension: Ask children to think and draw some materials that will be melted when applying a heat to it . For advanced students: Encourage students to answer the following question ( which melt more quickly big pieces of chocolate ? Small piece of chocolate? Why ? For beginners : Pair them with advanced learners to help them conclude the results . Provide extra assistance while carrying out the investigation . For visual learner: Looking at the flash and the word cards of the scientific terms will help them . For musical learners: singing the song will help them . 3 For bodily/kinesthetic learners : rubbing the plastic bags will help them move their hands Assessment: By observing students while doing the group work I can informally assess students' understanding. By participation and answering the teacher's question the teacher can informally assess students' understanding . By correcting the worksheet I can assess students' understanding Reflection : This lesson was fun for students. All my students liked the idea of rubbing and see what will happen to the materials after heating. Sometimes, they couldn't express what happened in English. Therefore, I have to rephrase their sentences in English. They also liked the idea of tasting how the chocolate would be melt in their mouths .However , I think it would be better to modified the worksheet to have more drawing than writing to suit students' levels. 4 5 6 Material Predict what will happen when heating it 7 Draw your result 8 9
