NACO basics All personal, geographic (jurisdictions), and corporate names with entries on a bib record must have an authority record in the NAF. If there is no record, create one for personal names and for names of cities. Any other heading without a record in the NAF should be referred to your cataloging trainer. Normal workflow once a heading requiring a new authority record has been identified is: locate relevant info. in book-in-hand consult ref. source if required (all geographic names and most personal names in the "look out for" category) search for LC in RLIN create authority record in OCLC LC in RLIN All headings being established must be searched in RLIN for usage in headings on LC records. RLIN searches can be limited with "als li dclc" to show LC records. When you find an LC record, print it and attach it to your authority record for your cataloging trainer to review. Citing from the book in hand: All forms of name and dates given in the heading and in references must be justified by the 670 citations. tag 670 source citation This field is repeatable. Use a separate 670 field for the book-in-hand and for each reference source cited. general format: Title proper (subfield a of 245), date of publication:‡bsource of data (data) source of data (data) examples: History of Mexico, 1997:‡bt.p. If a person is the subject of the book, usually the fullest form of name is chosen for the heading. tag 100 personal name indicator 1 0 name in direct order 1 surname (even if no forename is present) [blank] indicator 2 subfields a c d q name--usually in the form: surname, forename(s) title date fuller form of name always look for and cite in the 670: name birth and/or death dates titles degrees affiliation info. with the name on the chief source make references for: variant forms of the surname (the element to the left of the comma) variant forms of the first forename (the first element to the right of the comma) look out for (and seek help with): pseudonyms saints, bishops, kings, dukes, etc. people living before 1800 Candian imprints surname only on t.p. forename only on t.p. conflicts: You must check the NAF for conflicts. Refer any other geographic name not in the NAF/SAF to your cataloging trainer. Geographic names differ from personal names in two main ways: they require both a citation from the book-in-hand, AND a citation from a gazeteer if another city/town in the same country has the same name it is considered a conflict and must be resolved whether or not the other city/town is in the NAF tag 151 geographic name (cities) indicator 1 indicator 2 [blank] [blank] always look for and cite in the 670: name of city/town/village and any variants of the name any info. given about its location (coordinates, cities or features nearby, province/state, etc.) citing a gazeteer: Add a 670 citation for GEOnet unless the city/town is in Great Britain, the United States, or Canada.
