FAST FACULTY FACT
Academies were introduced at the Faculty of Medicine in 1994. The Academy system
provides professional program students with a clinical “home” – a base hospital,
access to libraries, medical education administrators, support staff, and a community
of clinical and didactic tutors. The Faculty’s three academies are the WightmanBerris, the FitzGerald, and the Peters-Boyd. The primary objective of the Academies
is to strengthen the ties between the UofT and its clinical partners through a
framework that facilitates decentralized curriculum delivery. Through their contacts
with students, the Directors and staff provide both academic and personal support to
students.
Results of Elections for Students on the Governing Council
The results of the student elections for Governing Council and the Academic Board
elections for 2004 are included below. The teaching staff and administrative staff
mail ballot elections for the Governing Council close at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March
26, and the results will be announced on March 31, 2004.

DALAI LAMA TO VISIT THE UofT
The UofT Chancellor, the Honourable Vivienne Poy, will confer the degree of Doctor
of Laws, honoris causa, upon His Holiness the Dalai Lama at a special convocation on
Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. His Holiness will also receive the International
Acharya Sushil Kumar Peace Award at this ceremony scheduled to take place in
Convocation Hall. Any faculty who would like to be members of the academic
procession should contact rsvp.president@utoronto.ca by April 19, 2004. Instructions
for members of the academic procession will be sent out at a later date. If you have
any questions, contact Brenda Ichikawa at 416-978-1049. His Holiness will be in
Toronto from April 25 to May 5, 2004 for the Kalachakra for World Peace. For more
information, go to www.kalachakra2004.com
UNDERGRADUATE MD PROGRAM CACMS/LCME ACCREDITATION
The Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools/Liaison Committee on
Medical Education (CACMS/LCME) will review our MD program from May 16 to 19,
2004. The survey team includes: Ian Bowmer, Team Chair (Memorial University of
Newfoundland); Robert Eaglen, Team Secretary (AAMC), Brendan Kenny (Université
de Sherbrooke); Christopher Cheeseman, (University of Alberta); Mary Wells,
(Memorial Health University Medical Center) and Carol Aschenbrener, Observer
(AAMC/LCME Co-Secretary Designate).
To prepare for accreditation, the Faculty has conducted a self-study for the past 18
months. The self-study involved representatives of the administration, faculty,
student body, and staff. Six issue-specific committees were struck to collect and
review data about the medical school and its educational programs; identify
institutional strengths and issues requiring action, and define strategies to ensure
that the strengths are maintained and any problems addressed. A Faculty
Institutional Self-Study Task Force oversaw the self-study, reviewed the individual
committee recommendations, and synthesized the findings into a final executive
summary, the Faculty Institutional Self-Study. Simultaneously, but at arms-length,
medical students conducted their own self-study in compliance with accreditation
guidelines. Both the Faculty and Student Self-Study Reports can now be accessed on
the Accreditation web site at http://bul.med.utoronto.ca/accreditation/.
