Application Procedures
The three-stage application and screening process for these London internships will be a lengthy one. Therefore, it
is strongly suggested that interested students begin the process at the beginning of the semester PRIOR to your
departure. ALL documents must be completed October 15 for Spring 2003 placements, or March 1, for Summer
2003 or Fall 2003.
Step 1:
Pick up the regular study abroad program application packet (green) in the Office
of Study Abroad, Room 109, International Center.
Step 2:
Please indicate on the ‘Study Abroad program’ line, “UK Internship” and the sponsoring college (example:
UK Internship - JMC).
Step 3:
Fully complete and sign all accompanying documents in the application packet.
Step 4:
Return the application packet to the Office of Study Abroad reception desk in Room 109, International
Center. This completes the first stage of the application process. At this time, you should request these
additional application materials kept at the front desk. Start updating your resume and thinking about what
type of internship you would prefer.
Step 5:
At the same time, OSA will check that you meet eligibility critera, and then notify the sponsoring college
of your application. A designee from that college will then contact you for intake interviews, at which
time, you will review the attached documents together. The completed documents and accompanying
materials must be submitted to the Office of Study Abroad no later than the October 15 for Spring 2003
placements, and March 1, for Summer 2003 or Fall 2003.
At this time, a $100 application fee will be charged to your student account. (This fee is nonrefundable for
accepted students.)
Step 6:
Students will be notified within three weeks after applying, if they have successfully passed second-stage
screening. Those who have been accepted will receive an additional information providing information
about housing, airfare, etc.
At this time, you will be allowed a grace period of 14 calendar days, after the date of the acceptance letter, to
cancel from the program without being billed a $200 deposit. After 14 days, your student account will be
charged a $200 deposit to reserve your place in the program. However, this deposit will be refunded once you
have begun your internship. Should you wish to cancel after this charge appears on your account, you will
not receive a refund.
Step 7:
Applications for accepted students will be forwarded to the Centre for Academic Programmes Abroad
(CAPA) in London for the third stage of the application process. CAPA will then seek placements to
match student interests. At this time, students will be asked to select their housing option: apartments or
homestays.
Step 8:
An MSU on-campus orientation for London interns will be held in April, which
all interns are required to attend. At this orientation, students will receive pertinent information about their
stay in London and they will receive syllabus packets detailing academic expectations.
Step 9:
Two orientations to be held in London: A general orientation about life in London and another orientation
about British work and culture, at which time, students will be told about their individual placements and
the time of the placement interview.
Step 10:
The London internship interview.
Applicants meeting eligibility requirements will be notified to the appropriate
college for the second stage of the application process. A designee from that
college will then contact those students for intake interviews, at which time, they
will review the attached documents. The completed documents and
accompanying materials must be submitted to the Office of Study Abroad no later
than October 15 for Spring 2003 placements, and March 1 for Summer 2003 or
Fall 2002.

INTERNSHIP AGREEMENT
1.
Internships are non-paying.
2.
You should be aware that while we try to secure a placement within an area you specify, there is no guarantee that we
can find a placement that exactly meets your expectations and you may be placed in an alternate, but related area.
3.
Your site is expected to provide a site supervisor, who will serve as your point of contact and advise you on work related
issues. It is the intern’s responsibility to maximize that opportunity by observing the practices of the workplace and
asking pertinent questions.
4.
The CAPA Internship Supervisor is there to help you and act as a conduit between yourself and the site. You should
feel free to contact the CAPA supervisor for advice and assistance during office hours. An appointment should be made
when a meeting is required.
5.
You will be required to commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week. The precise number of hours will vary according to
your programme. Exact scheduling will be worked out with your site supervisor at your interview in the UK
6.
Completion and return, to the CAPA internship staff, of the ‘Internship Interview Feedback Form’ is mandatory.
7.
Internships hours do not include travelling time. Expect to spend at least an hour commuting.
8.
An intern is expected to demonstrate an acceptable degree of competence and initiative before being given more
meaningful tasks.
9.
If issues arise it is the intern’s responsibility to initiate dialogue with their site supervisor and inform CAPA internship
staff.
10. It is your site supervisor’s prerogative to make changes to your duties and assign you other tasks.
11. Interns are expected to maintain acceptable standards of dress, behaviour, and respect in interaction with colleagues,
supervisors and managers.
12. Interns must follow all conditions of employment at their internship site.
13. You are required to inform your supervisor at your internship site of any planned or unplanned absences or tardiness.
Missed hours must be made up.
14. At the beginning of every programme there is a compulsory internship orientation.
15. Interns must attend their interview at the stated time
16. Sites retain the right to refuse an intern on the basis of their interview. There will be no refund in this instance.
CAPA will provide a second placement opportunity.
17. In the event of an internship being terminated the Internship Supervisor will assess the individual situation and act
accordingly. There will be no refunds. An alternative site will be provided only if the circumstance is deemed
appropriate.
18. The CAPA Internship Supervisor has the right to terminate an internship at any time there is evidence or
communication from the internship site that the student has failed to meet his or her basic responsibilities. The
decision is final and may not be appealed. Under such circumstances the student will be removed from the CAPA
programme. There will be no refund.
I have read the above conditions and agree to abide by them.
