Topic: Multiple Births
Purpose: Disclose the mystery of how multiples are formed and explain
their increasing numbers recently
Specific purpose: Explain the rising rate of multiple births due to the use
of fertility drugs and discuss the health risks the
multiples may face with
Thesis: Multiple births can be really rare compared to a birth with one child,
but the modern use of fertility drugs and IVF have resulted in the
increasing percentage of multiple births.
Introduction:
I. Attention:
A famous multiple-birth example: Quintuplets, the Dionne sisters
II. Reveal & relate topic:
A pregnancy with one baby is indeed wondrous, but imagine how
unusually marvelous it will be when we see twins, triplets,
quadruplets, and higher multiple births.
III. Credibility:
The International Society for Twin Studies (ISTS) recognizes the
Hellin’s Law as the rule of thumb that provides a principle of the
probability of multiple births: twins occur once in 89 births,
triplets once in 892 births, and quadruplets once in 893 births.
IV. Preview:
I’d like to provide some information of multiple births, about how
they occur, how the probability of them has increased, and how
they sometimes suffer from health problems.
Body:
I. Multiple births occur in two different ways: identical and fraternal.
A. Identical and fraternal twins plus their characteristics
B. Multiples: combinations of fraternal and identical siblings
(transition) Normally, the ovaries of a female produce only one egg in a
single cycle and the egg usually doesn’t split after fertilization, so
multiple births are not that easily formed.

II. Over the last decades, the advent of fertility drugs and fertility
treatment such as IVF has made the phenomenon of multiples
increasingly visible in the public eye.
A. The hormones in fertility drugs trick the ovaries to produce
more than one egg in a single circle and therefore increase the
possibility of multiple births.
B. In the IVF, more than one zygote will be placed into
women’s uterus in order to increase the chance of
implantation and gestation.
(transition) The more is not the better in this case.
III. Infants from these uncommonly higher multiple births may face
greater health risk than a singleton.
A. Higher death rates and higher risk of physical health
B. Encountering more psychological distress

Conclusion:
I. The increasing number of multiple births nowadays has made
them much less like a miracle or fairy tale.
II. When we admire them in wonder, I think it is worthwhile to realize
that what they have experienced is not all that great as we imagine.

Audience expectations for this speech include …the “mysteries” of
multiple births: how they are formed, their characteristics. Since most of
my classmates know little about this topic, I do not make my speech too
difficult.
Choices I've made include…avoiding too scientific or professional terms,
showing several photos of the multiples to enhance the interests of my
audiences.
