Mission Essential Task List (METL) UNIT Standard Operating Procedures 1. Mission. UNIT deploys, on order, as an aviation task force anywhere in the world to conduct combat aviation operations a. The primary mission of an assault helicopter battalion is to assault forces (combat arms, combat support and combat service support), using the firepower, mobility, and total integration of helicopter assets, maneuver on the battlefield under the control of the Air Assault Task Force Commander (AATFC) to engage and destroy enemy forces or seize and hold key terrain. (FM 1-113) b. 82nd Aviation Brigade Mission: On order, 82nd Aviation Brigade deploys worldwide to find, fix and destroy enemy forces using aerial fire and maneuver to concentrate and sustain combat power c. 82nd Airborne Division Mission: Within 18 hours of notification, the 82nd Airborne Division strategically deploys, conducts forcible-entry parachute assault and secures key objectives for follow-on military operations in support of U.S. national interests. 2. Mission Essential Task List. Deploy the Force - Transition the battalion from day-to-day training/readiness activities to a wartime footing. Extends to alerting the battalion of impending deployment and preparing aircraft, personnel and equipment for transport. Conduct – Controlling the battalion elements in a tactical environment. Conduct Aviation Operations – Conduct assault helicopter operations under the direct control of either the Aviation Brigade or Infantry Division/Brigade. Sustain The Force – Sustain the ability of the battalion to conduct assault helicopter operations through maintenance and supply actions/activities and return depleted supply stockages or damaged/inoperable materiel to a combat-ready status as rapidly as possible. Protect the Force – Manage the risk associated with combat operations from enemy, environmental, or human factors, preventing unnecessary losses to “non-combat” actions. Support to Counter Drug Operations – Participate in Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos (OPBAT), a US Army Southern Command mission that conducts over-water aerial interdiction flights in support of the Drug Enforcement Agency and Drug Enforcement Unit.
