How have entrepreneurs helped develop Georgia’s economy? Objectives: Text: Georgia CRCT Test Prep 8th Grade Georgia History Teaching the Georgia Performance Standards. Interrogate historical data by uncovering the social, political, and economic context in which it was created; testing the data source for its credibility, authority, authenticity, internal consistency and completeness; and detecting and evaluating bias, distortion, and propaganda by omission, suppression, or invention of facts. Identify the gaps in the available records and marshal contextual knowledge and perspectives of the time and place in order to elaborate imaginatively upon the evidence, fill in the gaps deductively, and construct a sound historical interpretation. Employ quantitative analysis in order to explore such topics as changes in family size and composition, migration patterns, wealth distribution, and changes in the economy. Assessment Strategies Key Question #1: The students will demonstrate knowledge of how opening a business in Georgia takes place. The students will complete a business project. THE STUDENTS WILL research one of the following Georgia businesses using their textbooks and lap tops; Home Depot, Zaxby’s, Chick- Fil-A, Paula Dean, Delta Air Lines, and Georgia Pacific, or they will create their own business as an entrepreneur. The students will design an informative poster and they will present their project to the class. THE STUDENTS WILL create a budget for their business based on the city their business is opened in. THE STUDENTS WILL Create Posters which will include: the business history, projected budget, an explanation on why there is a need for their business in the selected city within Georgia, and a colorful illustration of their business. (If a formal assessment, such as a quiz or rubric, is to be used develop this and include it as an attachment to the end of the lesson) Part One: Lesson Introduction ( This is brief usually 5-10 min): As students come in THE TEACHER WILL tell them they will be completing a project this week called I’m the Boss Project the students will have different tasks they will have to complete. THE TEACHER WILL explain they can do the project with a partner or individually. THE TEACHER WILL tell students to go ahead and decide if they want a partner or they want to work alone. Next THE TEACHER WILL go around to each set of students and one student for each set will draw a business out of the bag. The businesses are Paula Dean, Delta Airlines, Home Depot, Zaxby’s, Georgia Pacific, and Coca-Cola. THE TEACHER WILL then go around with a second bag and the students will draw to determine which city they want to open up their store in. THE TEACHER WILL pass out the project instructions along with the rubric. THE TEACHER WILL go over the rubric with the students. 1. How have entrepreneurs helped develop Georgia’s economy? The best way to find out is to become an entrepreneur or to own a business. 2. Students will be the CEO of a business in Georgia. 3. Their corporate office has told them they need to open up another store in Georgia. It is your job as the boss to make that happen. 4. Students will choose one of the following cities to open up their store; Collins, Reidsville, Statesboro, Vidalia, or Savannah. 5. Each business will be given $200,000.00 to start. The first step is to create a three month proposed budget. 6. Create a Poster to present to the class. The poster will include: a. An in depth description of the business. 1. Who founded the business? 2. Where was the first store? 3. Have their products changed? b. A colorful representation of their business. c. Five ways their business would help Georgia’s economy. 7. In addition to the poster EACH student will write a summary explaining the need for their business in the town and what products they will be producing. 8. Students will present their business proposals to the class. A. Anticipatory Set THE TEACHER WILL permit students to work on their poster projects and do research. THE TEACHER WILL monitor the students. THE TEACHER WILL inform students they are to create their budget first and turn it in by the end of the class. THE TEACHER WILL remind students they completed a budget earlier in the week. If they have questions they should feel free to ask or look back at their notes. Both people should be actively involved in the research THE TEACHER WILL be monitoring students, if a pair looks off task she could split them up.
