Introduction
Your group has won a trip to one of the following amazing places:
Great Barrier Reef
A Rainforest
The Desert
Antarctica
Once you have learnt about the difference between
Needs and Wants, which items will you need to take
with you on your holiday and why did you choose
these items? Where will you sleep and why?
The Task
Your task is to learn about the difference between needs and wants. You
will individually use the information you have learnt about your holiday
destination to decide what you will need to take on your trip. Once you
have decided what you will take, you will also need to present your ideas to
your group and give reasons for your choices.
To complete the task, as a group you will all decide what to pack in a
suitcase to take with you on your holiday.
For the final product, you will use:

The Process
You will go through the following steps to complete the project:
1.
You will be put into groups of five. Once your group has been chosen you will be told which
holiday you have won. Each person in the group will choose a card out of the box given to
your group. You will each have a special job depending on the card you picked. If you pick
out a globe card you will become an expert on the environment of the place you are going
to. If you pick a muffin card, you will become a nutritionist. If you pick a clothes card, you
will be the fashion expert of the group and if you pick a house card, you will be an architect.
2.
Click on the rainbow star and read about what needs and wants are.

Once you have learnt about the difference between needs and wants, click on
the pencil, and complete the activity on your own. You will need to fill in the
missing words and sort the items into the correct column. Click the Print
Preview button and then print your sheet.
4.
Click on the picture of your holiday destination and with your Year 5 helpers, you will learn
about the place you are going to. When you are reading the information pay attention to the
weather of the place you are going to and the kind of environment it is e.g. near water, snow,
dry land.

Now that you have discovered some information about where you will be going, click on the
picture, which shows what you are going to become an expert in and complete your own
activities. Click the Print Preview button and then print your worksheets.
6.
Congratulations on becoming experts! Share what you have learnt with your other group
members.
7.
Click on the suitcase and as a group ‘pack’ for your trip to your special place.
You will need to find pictures in Microsoft Clip Art of the objects you are going
to take. Remember to think about the items you will need to take with you, not
things you might like to take. Once the suitcase is packed, click the Print
Preview button and then print your work.
