Museum Rules
The protection and preservation of the art is the top priority of the Museum of Fine Arts,
Houston (MFAH). The following rules regarding all Florescence entries will be strictly
enforced at all times. Failure to comply with these rules may result in disqualification and
removal of an exhibit.
1.
Safe Distance From Art Must Be Maintained – Pedestals, tables, and risers may
not be moved or repositioned as they are all carefully placed by MFAH staff. In
addition, classes with dimension limits will be closely monitored for compliance.
2.
Misting of Exhibits is Prohibited – Exhibitors may not mist any material,
including any material for Flower Arranging (whether a completed arrangement
or backup material in buckets or boxes) or any material for Horticulture (whether
container grown, a cut specimen, or a completed Horticulture Design).
The only exception to this rule is the official Florescence Preservation Committee.
The Committee will monitor the condition of entries overnight and maintain all in
pristine condition. Only the Preservation Committee may mist or top off water for
any exhibit.
3.
Use of Paints and Glues is Prohibited in the MFAH – Paint, shellac, mastic,
adhesive, glue, or any other such material, whether aerosol spray, non-aerosol
spray, bottle, jar, or can are not permitted inside the MFAH. Glue guns, paint
pens, and glitter pens are not permitted inside the MFAH.
4.
Flash Photography is Prohibited in the MFAH – Exhibitors may not use flash
photography in the MFAH. Only the official Florescence photographers may use
flash cameras.
Please help the MFAH ensure the safety of its collection for the generations to come. We
are all stewards in the preservation of our cultural heritage.

Florescence schedule as of 10/1/2008
General Rules
1.
Florescence Elements is a GCA Major Flower Show. All rules as stated in The
Garden Club of America Flower Show and Judging Guide, 2000 revised
edition, shall apply.
Safety:
2.
The protection of the art is the top priority of the MFAH and therefore is the
top priority of all Florescence participants. Displays and pedestals may not be
moved once placed by the MFAH.
3.
The Garden Club of America (GCA), The Garden Club of Houston (GCH),
River Oaks Garden Club (ROGC), and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
(MFAH), will exercise due caution in safeguarding exhibits. Responsibility
for damage, loss, or personal injury before, during, or after the show cannot be
assumed. Valuables used in exhibits should be insured by the exhibitor.
4.
Entrance to the MFAH will be limited during staging and entry times.
Nametags will be required for entrance and time lines will be strictly
enforced.
Entries:
5.
Any clarification or change in the rules as originally stated in the schedule
will be communicated promptly in writing by the Division Chairmen to all
exhibitors in the class, and at the show, to the Passing Committees and the
Judges.
6.
Entries in Divisions I through VI are open to all members of GCA clubs,
including members who are professionals in their fields, except for Division I
Class 5; Division I Class 6; and Division III.
7.
Registration for Divisions I, III, IV, V, and VI is required. Registration forms
are provided at the back of the schedule.
8.
Fees for: Division I Class 4; Division III Classes 1, 2, and 3; Division V
Classes 1, 2, 3, and 4; and Division VI Classes 1 and 2 must accompany
registration forms.
9.
Classes will be filled in the order registration forms are received according to
the postmark or fax date. Confirmation of registration will follow by
email/fax/phone/or mail.
14
Florescence schedule as of 10/1/2008
10.
An entry card must accompany each entry. (Entry cards are available at the
back of this schedule except for Division II). Entry cards for Division II will
be available at the show and, upon request from the Entry or Division
Chairmen, in advance of the show. Information required on the entry card
must be printed in pencil or black waterproof ink or typed.
11.
All containers and accessories must be inconspicuously labeled with the
exhibitor’s name.
Plant Material:
12.
All plant material must be correctly identified with the botanical and common
names on the entry card, if possible, except where indicated in the schedule.
The RHS Index of Garden Plants and The AHS A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden
Plants are the accepted references and will be available at the show.
13.
The Garden Club of America expects all exhibitors to be aware of the need to
promote conservation of endangered and threatened plants and to prohibit use
of invasive plants. Plants collected from the wild and listed as endangered in
Texas may not be exhibited in a GCA sponsored flower show. Cultivated
plant material listed as endangered in Texas may be exhibited only if
accompanied by a typed card stating that it has not been collected from the
wild and giving information concerning its cultural requirements and methods
of propagation.
14.
A list of Texas threatened, endangered, and locally invasive species is
available upon request from the Horticulture Chairmen, and will be available
at the show and online at: www.flohouston.org.
15.
No insects, pests, or diseased plant material will be allowed in the flower
show. Subsequently, any infested or diseased plant material will be removed
immediately.
Entry & Passing Process:
16.
All Flower Arrangement material is to be delivered through the Main Street
entrance of the Beck Building. Division I entries will be passed in place. For
entry and removal times, please refer to the Florescence Calendar and the
Flower Arrangement Rules.
17.
Horticulture entry and passing is through the Museum garage entrance. For
entry and removal times, please refer to the Florescence Calendar and the
Horticulture Rules.
18.
Horticulture Design entry is through the Museum garage entrance.
Horticulture Design passing is done in place. For entry and removal times,
please refer to the Florescence Calendar and the Horticulture Design Rules.
15
Florescence schedule as of 10/1/2008
19.
The Passing Committee must pass each entry before an exhibitor may leave
the show area. The Passing Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry
that does not conform to the schedule. The exhibitor has the option of
correcting the entry, if time permits. If not corrected, the entry cannot be
judged, but may remain in place, marked “For Exhibition Only”. The judges
may not disqualify any entry passed by the Passing Committee.
20.
Once an entry is passed, the exhibitor(s) must immediately leave the
exhibition area. A passed entry may not be touched again until after judging
and then only to carry out necessary maintenance. Exception: In the event of
an unforeseen accident, including failure of mechanics or wilted plant
material, the exhibitor(s) may make the necessary repairs to the exhibit, with
special permission and oversight from the Passing Committee. The exhibit
must then be passed a second time, with the entry card marked accordingly
(PP).
21.
At no time may exhibitors touch any exhibits other than their own.
Judging:
22.
Only participating Judges, Clerks, Flower Show Committee Chairmen, and
Division Chairmen will be allowed on the floor during judging.
23.
A novice is an exhibitor who has not won first place in the division entered, at
a GCA Major Flower Show. Only an individual novice exhibitor is eligible to
receive The Garden Club of America Novice Award and the Sandra Baylor
Novice Flower Arrangement Award. A novice exhibitor will be identified by a
yellow dot placed on top of the entry card, following the initial judging.
Removal:
24.
All exhibits must remain in place and in show condition until 15 minutes after
the show’s closing time.
16
Florescence schedule as of 10/1/2008
Division I: Flower Arrangement Rules
1.
Please read the General Rules.
Entries:
2.
Registration is required between Wednesday, October 1, 2008 and
Wednesday, January 21, 2009 by using the form in the schedule (the form is
also available online at www.flohouston.org). Please send the registration
form to: Claudia Lummis, 5540 Sturbridge, Houston, Texas 77056-1623.
3.
Exhibitors are allowed one entry per class and may enter more than one class.
The exhibitor(s) under whose name(s) the entry has been registered must
arrange the entry. All participants must be listed.
4.
One partner is allowed in every class except the Challenge Class and
Provisional Class 5.
5.
If forced to withdraw, an exhibitor must find a substitute unless there is a
waiting list for the class. The Entries Chairmen must be notified immediately
of any changes.
6.
All arrangements must be completed at the show (except for Class 5 and Class
6). Complex compositions requiring extensive time for construction may be
prefabricated and assembled at the show.
The entries in Class 5 (second year provisional entries from River Oaks
Garden Club) and Class 6 (first year provisional entries from The Garden
Club of Houston and River Oaks Garden Club) may be constructed
completely off-site.
7.
The MFAH curators will do their best to ensure artwork is not changed before
Florescence 2009; however, on occasion it may be. If this occurs, exhibitors
will be notified as soon as possible by the Entries Chair.
8.
Upon receipt of the registration form, a small photocopy of the art will be
mailed to the exhibitor (Copyright laws prohibit publication of most MFAH
art in the schedule or on the Florescence website). Unfortunately, it is possible
the colors on the photocopy will not match the actual colors of the piece of art
perfectly and the judges will be made aware of this.
9.
Brief statements of intent (20 words or less) are required in Class 12 and
optional in other classes.
10.
Please refer to the Florescence Calendar for entry and removal times.
17
Florescence schedule as of 10/1/2008
Arrangement Requirements/Plant Material:
11.
Enlargement of a pedestal top is not allowed.
12.
All arrangements must include fresh and/or dried plant material. Artificial
plant material is not allowed.
13.
Manipulation of plant material is permitted.
14.
Painting of live plant material should be done with discretion before arriving
at the MFAH.
15.
Cut fruits/vegetables or food of any kind, live animals (including fish),
taxidermy, natural birds’ nests, protected sea-life, and locally invasive plant
materials are not permitted.
16.
Fresh plant material must be in water or be so conditioned as to remain in
pristine form while on exhibition. An arrangement not maintained in show
condition may have its award removed.
17.
Mechanics should not be visible unless they are an integral part of the design.
18.
Exhibitors should provide replacement material for refreshing of exhibits.
19.
Exhibits may not be misted at any point.
During Entry Time:
20.
Out of courtesy to the exhibitors, only listed exhibitors and show personnel
may be on the show floor during entry times. Exhibitors must depart the
staging area and the galleries after their exhibits are passed.
Challenge Class:
21.
The Challenge Class is open to out-of-town exhibitors only and requires
payment of a fee.
22.
Pedestal assignment is determined by order of entry.
23.
Only clippers and/or knives may be used in the Challenge Class.
18
Florescence schedule as of 10/1/2008
Judging:
24.
Judging of all Flower Arrangement entries will be based on the principles of
design: balance, contrast, dominance, proportion, rhythm, and scale; and the
elements of design: light, space, line, form, color, texture, pattern, and size.
Creativity is important, as is distinction, conformance, and interpretation of
the class and schedule.
Removal:
25.
All entries must be removed at the close of the show.
26.
For an additional charge, an out-of-town exhibitor’s entry material may be
returned by a shipping service.
Inquiries:
By fax or email at any time.
By telephone weekdays between 9 am and 5 pm (Central Time).

Division VII: Conservation
Air
“Birds …if you watch them closely
you can see them following
invisible pathways in the air…” (Patrick Lane)
There are four major routes or “flyways” birds use to migrate between North and Central
America. Two of these critical flyways, the Central and the Mississippi, overlap over Texas. As a
result, many of the North American birds that breed in the US and Canada but leave for the
winter for warmer climates, such as Central and South America, pass through Texas.
For these birds as well as for Texas birds, habitat in Texas is crucial. As more of the state
develops, natural habitat is lost. Citizens and companies can step in, by creating Texas
wildscapes and backyard habitats with help from The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center (The
Arboretum).
The Arboretum’s mission is to provide education about the natural environment to people of all
ages (nearly 200,000 annually) and to protect and enhance the Arboretum as a haven and as a
sanctuary for native plants and animals. The Arboretum is a 155-acre non-profit urban nature
center located on the western edge of Memorial Park. It is administered by a board of directors
and staff and maintains its grounds via a management agreement with the City of Houston.
At Florescence Elements, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Garden Club of Houston, and
River Oaks Garden Club join hands with The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center to help teach
how simple it is to create natural habitats for birds.
