Naylor Lou Ellen Stansell Museum Rules The protection and preservation of the art is the top priority of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). The following rules regarding all Florescence entries will be strictly enforced at all times. Failure to comply with these rules may result in disqualification and removal of an exhibit. 1. Safe Distance From Art Must Be Maintained – Pedestals, tables, and risers may not be moved or repositioned as they are all carefully placed by MFAH staff. In addition, classes with dimension limits will be closely monitored for compliance. 2. Misting of Exhibits is Prohibited – Exhibitors may not mist any material, including any material for Flower Arranging (whether a completed arrangement or backup material in buckets or boxes) or any material for Horticulture (whether container grown, a cut specimen, or a completed Horticulture Design). The only exception to this rule is the official Florescence Preservation Committee. The Committee will monitor the condition of entries overnight and maintain all in pristine condition. Only the Preservation Committee may mist or top off water for any exhibit. 3. Use of Paints and Glues is Prohibited in the MFAH – Paint, shellac, mastic, adhesive, glue, or any other such material, whether aerosol spray, non-aerosol spray, bottle, jar, or can are not permitted inside the MFAH. Glue guns, paint pens, and glitter pens are not permitted inside the MFAH. 4. Flash Photography is Prohibited in the MFAH – Exhibitors may not use flash photography in the MFAH. Only the official Florescence photographers may use flash cameras. Please help the MFAH ensure the safety of its collection for the generations to come. We are all stewards in the preservation of our cultural heritage. 13 Florescence schedule as of 10/1/2008 General Rules 1. Florescence Elements is a GCA Major Flower Show. All rules as stated in The Garden Club of America Flower Show and Judging Guide, 2000 revised edition, shall apply. Safety: 2. The protection of the art is the top priority of the MFAH and therefore is the top priority of all Florescence participants. Displays and pedestals may not be moved once placed by the MFAH. 3. The Garden Club of America (GCA), The Garden Club of Houston (GCH), River Oaks Garden Club (ROGC), and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), will exercise due caution in safeguarding exhibits. Responsibility for damage, loss, or personal injury before, during, or after the show cannot be assumed. Valuables used in exhibits should be insured by the exhibitor. 4. Entrance to the MFAH will be limited during staging and entry times. Nametags will be required for entrance and time lines will be strictly enforced. Entries: 5. Any clarification or change in the rules as originally stated in the schedule will be communicated promptly in writing by the Division Chairmen to all exhibitors in the class, and at the show, to the Passing Committees and the Judges. 6. Plants collected from the wild and listed as endangered in Texas may not be exhibited in a GCA sponsored flower show. Cultivated plant material listed as endangered in Texas may be exhibited only if accompanied by a typed card stating that it has not been collected from the wild and giving information concerning its cultural requirements and methods of propagation. 14. A list of Texas threatened, endangered, and locally invasive species is available upon request from the Horticulture Chairmen, and will be available at the show and online at: www.flohouston.org. 15. No insects, pests, or diseased plant material will be allowed in the flower show. Subsequently, any infested or diseased plant material will be removed immediately. Entry & Passing Process: 16. The Passing Committee must pass each entry before an exhibitor may leave the show area. The Passing Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry that does not conform to the schedule. The exhibitor has the option of correcting the entry, if time permits. If not corrected, the entry cannot be judged, but may remain in place, marked “For Exhibition Only”. The judges may not disqualify any entry passed by the Passing Committee. 20. Once an entry is passed, the exhibitor(s) must immediately leave the exhibition area. A passed entry may not be touched again until after judging and then only to carry out necessary maintenance. Exception: In the event of an unforeseen accident, including failure of mechanics or wilted plant material, the exhibitor(s) may make the necessary repairs to the exhibit, with special permission and oversight from the Passing Committee. The exhibit must then be passed a second time, with the entry card marked accordingly (PP). 21. At no time may exhibitors touch any exhibits other than their own. Judging: 22. Only participating Judges, Clerks, Flower Show Committee Chairmen, and Division Chairmen will be allowed on the floor during judging. 23. A novice is an exhibitor who has not won first place in the division entered, at a GCA Major Flower Show. Only an individual novice exhibitor is eligible to receive The Garden Club of America Novice Award and the Sandra Baylor Novice Flower Arrangement Award. A novice exhibitor will be identified by a yellow dot placed on top of the entry card, following the initial judging. Removal: 24. The Entries Chairmen must be notified immediately of any changes. 6. All arrangements must be completed at the show (except for Class 5 and Class 6). Complex compositions requiring extensive time for construction may be prefabricated and assembled at the show. The entries in Class 5 (second year provisional entries from River Oaks Garden Club) and Class 6 (first year provisional entries from The Garden Club of Houston and River Oaks Garden Club) may be constructed completely off-site. 7. The MFAH curators will do their best to ensure artwork is not changed before Florescence 2009; however, on occasion it may be. If this occurs, exhibitors will be notified as soon as possible by the Entries Chair. 8. Upon receipt of the registration form, a small photocopy of the art will be mailed to the exhibitor (Copyright laws prohibit publication of most MFAH art in the schedule or on the Florescence website). Unfortunately, it is possible the colors on the photocopy will not match the actual colors of the piece of art perfectly and the judges will be made aware of this. 9. Brief statements of intent (20 words or less) are required in Class 12 and optional in other classes. 10. Two of these critical flyways, the Central and the Mississippi, overlap over Texas. As a result, many of the North American birds that breed in the US and Canada but leave for the winter for warmer climates, such as Central and South America, pass through Texas. For these birds as well as for Texas birds, habitat in Texas is crucial. As more of the state develops, natural habitat is lost. Citizens and companies can step in, by creating Texas wildscapes and backyard habitats with help from The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center (The Arboretum). The Arboretum’s mission is to provide education about the natural environment to people of all ages (nearly 200,000 annually) and to protect and enhance the Arboretum as a haven and as a sanctuary for native plants and animals. The Arboretum is a 155-acre non-profit urban nature center located on the western edge of Memorial Park. It is administered by a board of directors and staff and maintains its grounds via a management agreement with the City of Houston. At Florescence Elements, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Garden Club of Houston, and River Oaks Garden Club join hands with The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center to help teach how simple it is to create natural habitats for birds.
