Course Description: Health Science Education provides an overview of health care careers. The goal is to assist the students by making them aware of opportunities available and to prepare them to pursue further education and/or training. Medical terminology is a large portion of the class. Every week students will learn 25 new medical technology word elements. We use the Medical Terminology 350 program of 14 videos and related worksheets. Classroom expectations & discipline: I have attached a list of the classroom behavior expectations in this packet. Required Materials: Paper – needed many days but not all. I don’t mind if it comes from a spiral notebook, but be prepared to tear it out and put it in the inbox at the end of the period. Pen – preferably black ink but blue ink is acceptable. Please do not use other color ink (including red, purple, green, etc.) Binder or folder – I don’t care which – just something for keeping loose papers because they are often used again in class. A jump drive is helpful for saving work done in the computer lab. It doesn’t have to be dedicated for my class. Lesson units – dates are tentative and can change due to weather, illness, etc.: Jan. 7 – 11: Getting to know you, Rules and Procedures, Medical Terminology Lesson 1 Jan. 14 – Jan. 25: HOSA, Leadership Qualities, Communication, Cultural Differences, Defense Mechanisms, Documentation, Medical Terminology Lessons 2 & 3 Jan. 28 – Feb. 15: History & Development of Health Care, Health Care Facilities, Reimbursement, Insurance, Medical Terminology Lessons 4, 5, & 6 Feb. 19 – Mar. 1: OSHA, Infection Control, Sterile Technique, Fire Safety, Body Mechanics, First Aid, Medical Terminology Lesson 7 Mar. 4 – 6: Preparation & review for exams March 7: Midterm exams for 3rd & 4th blocks March 8: Midterm exams for 1st & 2nd blocks Second 9-weeks: CPR, Legal/Ethical, Patient Rights, Scope of Care, HIPAA, Confidentiality, Health Careers, Vital Signs, Anatomy & Physiology (Growth & Development, Body Systems), Essentials of Nutrition, Height & Weight, Conversions, Job Skills, Resume’, Time Management, Medical Terminology lessons 8 through 14 . Tests, grading, evaluation: There are a LOT of tests in this class. There, I said it! It’s just a fact. Each medical terminology lesson has a related test and these are given approximately once a week, usually on Thursdays or Fridays. I also give unit tests for most units. I evaluate student performance in other ways too, such as two projects and other skill demonstration such as CPR and vital signs. Tests are scheduled at least 3-4 days in advance so they aren’t a surprise. Because I announce tests in advance, I expect you to take them on a timely basis. For example, if I announce Thursday’s test on Monday when you’re here, but you’re out on Wednesday, I expect you to take the test on Thursday with the class. If you miss the day of the test, please make arrangements with me to take the test within one week. Tests not scheduled within this time will have points deducted. Other vital information: You will receive CPR training (even if you’ve taken it 3 times this year already! Sorry, I just hear this a lot). A $1.50 fee will be required for the card. I encourage you to join HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). You must be a paid HOSA member to participate in job shadowing and competitions at regional, state, and national levels; assist with Red Cross blood drives in the spring. The fee is $15: $10 for national dues, $4 for state dues, and $1 for our local chapter. If you plan to pursue a health care career, HOSA membership will look good on your resume’. More information about the organization is located at www.hosa.org. We also have a Facebook page for our school chapter: https://www.facebook.com/SpringfieldHighSchoolHosa. I look forward to working with you this semester! Sincerely, Marisa Bush
