Course Description: Intended primarily for students who require both an introductory statistics course and a course of
intermediate algebra. This course covers introductory statistics topics such as descriptive analysis and treatment of data,
probability and probability distributions, linear regression and tools of statistical inference while also covering the
support content from intermediate algebra needed to study these topics and more. Credit may not be earned in both
MATH 117 and MATH 117A. Credit may not be earned in both MATH 115A and MATH 117A. Not intended for
students with a grade of C or better in MATH 093 (formerly MA097) or MATH 096 (formerly MA099) or their
equivalent.
Prerequisite: Appropriate score on the mathematics assessment test, a grade of C or better in MA 080 (formerly
MA094), or consent of department.
Assessment levels: EN 101/101A, RD 120.

MA 117A fulfills a General Education Program Mathematics foundation requirement. Montgomery College’s
General Education Program is designed to ensure that students have the skills, knowledge and attitudes to carry them

Algebra Departmental Competency Exam:
The competency test will be given at the beginning of the 6th week of the semester. A student who scores under
70% on this ALGEBRA COMPETENCY test cannot continue with the college-level material of the class
(M117) - NO EXCEPTIONS – We are discussing the possibility of a make up for students who score between
50% and 69%.
Final Course Grade:
The final course grade for students who pass the competency test with at least 70% will be determined by the
work in the Math 117 portion of the course.
Exams:
You will be given a zero for every exam missed and NO MAKE UPS will be given.
The following applies to students who miss at most 3 classes in the semester
The final exam will count as a final and also to replace the lowest of the three Statistics tests, if the final exam grade is
higher.
On an exam/quiz day: I will not provide calculators/pencils.
You will not be permitted to leave the room.
You will not be permitted to share calculators.

Final Exam: Comprehensive over all Statistics material
Homework:
You will have to set aside a significant amount of time for learning the material in this course; it is recommended you
spend more than 10 hours a week studying for this class. Usually, when we start covering the Statistics material which is
condensed over the last 7 weeks of the semester, students need more than 15 hours of study time per week.
If you do not make this commitment, your chances of success are greatly diminished.
For the first 5 weeks of the semester, every day’s lecture will consist of one hour of algebra and 25 minutes of Statistics
For the Algebra portion you can find Power point presentations, videos and other handouts in my website. Use them
along with your notes to review the concepts before doing the online MML homework. Also take advantage of the online
features: “Help me solve this”, “View an example”.
For Statistics it’s important that you read the book and the examples before trying the online homework.

Make-up Policy: There are NO MAKE UPS for quizzes and exams. Late assignments will count for half its value.
Attendance Policy: Attendance will be taken at the beginning of every class. Three five-minutes tardy will be
recorded as 1 absence. If you have to leave class early, let me know in advance and indicate ½ day in the attendance
sheet. If you have to miss a class, send due-assignments with a classmate or e-mail them to me. Late assignments will
count for ½ its value. It is your responsibility to find out what you have missed. Read the daily log and ask one of
your fellow classmates for assignments. To study the missed material, read the book and/or power point
presentations. Do not expect that during my office hour I summarize for you what you missed in class.

Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend all class sessions. In cases involving excessive absences from class, the instructor
may drop the student from the class. An excessive absence is defined as one more absence than the number of classes per week during
a fall or spring semester; the number of absences is pro-rated for accelerated sessions.
Withdrawal and Refund Dates: It is the student’s responsibility to drop a course. Non-attendance of classes or failure to pay does not
