West Michigan Career Fest 2012 Date: 10/16/12 – 4 hours in length Participating Employees: Amanda Reader Host/Sponsor of Activity: West Michigan Collegiate Career Services Consortium (Aquinas College, Calvin College, Cornerstone University, Grand Valley State University and Hope College) Brief Description of Activity: Career fair lasted from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM 2. Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation Career Fair Date(s): 10/16/12 – 3 hours in length Participating Employees: Linda Kennedy and Mike Kluczyk Host/Sponsor of Activity: WGVU and Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation (MABF) Brief Description of Activity and Station Participation: WGVU co-sponsored a regional broadcasting job fair with MABF. Linda and Mike attended the fair and had a booth discussing job opportunities and internship opportunities at WGVU. The event lasted 3 hours. 3. GVSU Career Fest Date: 2/21/13 – 4 hours in length Participating Employees: Brad Gordon Host/Sponsor of Activity: Aquinas College, Baker College, Calvin College, Cornerstone University, Davenport University, Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Valley State University, Hope College, Kendall College of Art & Design, Muskegon Community College Brief Description of Activity: Career fair lasted from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM 4. Non-Profit Internship and Volunteer Fair Date: 9/11/12– 3 hours in length Participating Employees: Amanda Reader Host/Sponsor of Activity: Grand Valley State University Brief Description of Activity and Station Participation: Internship and Volunteer Fair lasted from 12 PM – 3 PM. Amanda attended the fair and had a booth discussing internship opportunities at WGVU. 5. Youth Media Project Date of Station Participation: September 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013 Brief Description of Activity and Station Participation: Since September 2012 WGVU has been working in all six Grand Rapids Public middle schools with at risk 8th graders on a “youth voice” media project training the students to use cameras to capture their own stories about their challenges and successes at home and in school. With the goal of inspiring other students, these stories are being shared on-air through a weekly WGVU Radio segment, on the web, at school assemblies, and in the community including at a recent Lions Club meeting. This local WGVU project is called, Get Your Diploma. Get Your Dream.” WGVU’s partners include, the Michigan Gear Up Program through Grand Valley State University, Kent Intermediate School District, Kent School Services Network, the Literacy Center of West Michigan, the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan, Grand Rapids Public Schools, Heart of West Michigan United Way, Kids Food Basket, PNC Bank, and On the Border. 6. WGVU Broadcast Class Date of Station Participation: 4/23/13 – 7 hours in length Brief Description of Activity and Station Participation: 8th graders who attended this “real world” activity worked side by side with WGVU professionals learning how to put together a program start to finish. As part of this class they produced their own messages. The goal of this class was to demonstrate to students the relevancy of their day to day classroom work to a real world broadcasting experience, and to engage them more with their own education. 7. Broad Dissemination of Notice of Specific Job Openings Date of Station Participation: Ongoing Brief Description: WGVU maintains and regularly updates a Recruitment and Referral Source Information list which has more than 250 entities that receive information about all full-time WGVU vacancies that arise. 8. Grand Valley State University Scholarship Program Brief Description: Students apply for this scholarship if they are interested in majoring in Communications. A panel of station employees decides who will receive the scholarship. One student per year is awarded full tuition for her/his studies. 9. Internship Program Brief Description: WGVU has an active internship program for students at Grand Valley State University, students of other universities or high school, and members of the community. The number of slots and types of internship positions vary each year. The availability of these internships is advertised on WGVU’s website.
