Definition fear:
“an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm (...) a feeling of anxiety (= Furcht)
concerning the outcome of something or the safety of someone (...) the likelihood (= Wahrscheinlichkeit)
of something unwelcome happening” (Oxford English Dictionary)
 Directed to future events
 Not persistent (= nicht andauernd)
 There is a reason why the person is afraid (e.g. the company has no money and they have to
dismiss people; therefore, the employees fear that they are going to lose their jobs)
Definition phobia:
“an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion (= Abneigung) to something” (Oxford English Dictionary)
 Can be called a mental illness
 Characterised by a persistent fear that is excessive and unreasonable
 Concerned person is physically and/or psychologically impaired (= beeinträchtigt) by phobia
