Presented by: Juluat, Arriane Joy I- OPSDIA At the end of the Presentation, you will understand and learn about: Definition of Phobia Types of Phobia Symptoms Of Phobia Common Phobias Overcoming Phobias My Top Ten Phobias Psychiatrists define a phobia as a type of anxiety disorder that consists of a morbid and irrational fear of a specific object or situation associated with severe anxiety, and recognized by the subject to be unreasonable or unwarranted. It is more than fear, however, for the feared object or situation must be avoided, or can be endured only with marked distress, because of the anxiety response or panic attack that it almost invariably provokes. This condition is also known as angst Phobias are IRRATIONAL, meaning that they interfere with one's everyday life or daily routine. For example, if your fear of high places prevents you from crossing necessary bridges to get to work, that fear is irrational. If your fears keep you from enjoying life or even preoccupy your thinking so that you are unable to work, or sleep, or do the things you wish to do, then it becomes irrational. Other words that are synonyms of the word phobia include: fear, hatred, dread, anxiety, aversion, panic, fright, terror, torment, scare, terrify, angst, disgust, abhorrence, antipathy, repulsion, and revulsion. 1. Specific phobias (also known as simple phobia or isolated phobia). 2. Social phobias (social anxiety disorders; although when they occur in children, they are known as avoidant disorders). The essential feature of a specific phobia is a persistent, irrational fear of, and compelling desire to avoid, specific objects or situations. This kind of phobia is characterized by a relatively specific fear of an object or situation. The range of stimuli that may elicit a fearful response is narrower than in other phobic disorders and such phobias are sometimes also referred to as simple phobias. •animal type - cued by animals or insects •natural environment type - cued by objects in the environment, such as storms, heights, or water •blood-injection-injury type - cued by witnessing some invasive medical procedure •situational type - cued by a specific situation, such as public transportation, tunnels, bridges, elevators, flying, driving, or enclosed spaces •other type - cued by other stimuli than the above, such as of choking, vomiting, or contracting an illness Individuals who have social phobias have excessive anxieties in social situations; such as, parties, meetings, interviews, restaurants, making complaints, writing in public, eating in restaurants, and interacting with the opposite sex, strangers, and aggressive individuals. They often fear situations in which they believe they are being observed and evaluated, such as eating, drinking, speaking in public, driving, etc. Unlike specific or simple phobias, which tend to diminish as the individual grows into puberty and young adulthood, social phobias persist as one gets older. Many such individuals have traits that interfere with social and marital adjustment. Some have ongoing problems with generalized anxiety, dependence, authority, and depression. As defined by the American Psychiatric Association, “Agoraphobia is the fear of being alone in any place or situation from which it would be difficult or help unattainable should the need arise.” Most people will develop this disorder after experiencing an intense panic attack in a situation such as being in a room full of people or on a busy street. These attacks are random and the person fears another. The person eventually becomes afraid to leave their own home. This is the most debilitating of the phobias. Phobias are emotional but cause the body to exhibit physical symptoms. Feelings of panic and dread or terror Recognition that the fear is abnormal Reactions that are involuntary and out of control Rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, trembling, sweating, intense anxiety, and an Overwhelming desire to leave the situation Extreme measures taken to avoid the feared object or situation Impaired ability to function at normal tasks due to fear Taking usual measure to avoid the cause of your fear Ablutophobia- Fear of washing or bathing. In behavior modification, which is effective with those who experience object or situational phobias such as fear of flying (pterygophobia), a trained therapist assists the person to confront his fears and to control his physical reaction. This may done through a form of deep breathing or exposure therapy in which the person is gradually exposed to his fear and shown coping skills. Medications can be added in the treatment of panic attacks associated with agoraphobia or social phobia. Paxil, an antidepressant, has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for social phobia. Beta Blockers work by blocking the stimulating effect of epinephrine (adrenaline) which increases heart rate and elevates blood pressure. A sedative in a low dose can be prescribed for a short period. Most people have some fear or aversion to some object or situation in life. It is when this fear becomes so intense that it causes not only an emotional reaction, but a physical one as well, that it becomes a phobia. When life has become miserable due to fear, when leaving the house becomes impossible, when employment becomes difficult, seek treatment. There is hope. Remember an old German proverb: “Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is.” “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the littledeath that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” Entomophobia- Fear of insects.
