AP WORKSHOP 2009 By Sonya Breaux and Andrea Perez What's a blog? A blog is a personal diary. A daily pulpit. A collaborative space. A political soapbox. A breaking-news outlet. A collection of links. Your own private thoughts. Memos to the world. Your blog is whatever you want it to be. There are millions of them, in all shapes and sizes, and there are no real rules. In simple terms, a blog is a web site, where you write stuff on an ongoing basis. New stuff shows up at the top, so your visitors can read what's new. Then they comment on it or link to it or email you. Or not. Since Blogger was launched in 1999, blogs have reshaped the web, impacted politics, shaken up journalism, and enabled millions of people to have a voice and connect with others. What is Voki? Voki is a free service that allows you to create personalized speaking avatars and use them on your blog, profile, and in email messages. Voki is brought to you by the folks at Oddcast, a New York based company that has been creating innovative user-generated media technologies for years. Find and use personality traits, generate new vocabulary, attitudes, and understanding of culture. Examples: - La siesta del martes – Gabriel García Márquez Character: The Sun Traits: Controlling Powerful/Forceful Overbearing After analyzing all the characters, pick one and apply this character to another role. Imagine that the sun had a speaking role in a film like Finding Nemo. Who would he be? (Answer: Darla the dentist’s granddaughter) You can also relate the character to other stories: The sun could be related to Tio Clodio in the story, “Las Medias Rojas” by …. Why? They are both controlling and overbearing. They run the lives of others. Activity: Have students create a dialogue based on the Sun’s character traits. What would he say if he were Darla? Switch: What would he say if he were Nemo? How would Nemo’s attitudes change? Apply to debates: What would “The Sun” think of The current: Castro/Chávez/Obama/Juan Carlos The deceased: Guevara/Franco/Hitler Former: Bush/Clinton Materials needed: Graphic organizer showing the relationships between characters. I understood that 100%! Wow! You used extra vocabulary that I didn’t know you knew and idiomatic expressions were used correctly! Bravo! Really? Can you give more details? You even used words from past chapters! Attempted some idiomatic expressions but perhaps were not used correctly. Circulomotion! Great! Grammar Frequent attempt at varied complexities with no mistakes. Grammar was excelente! Bravo! Moderate attempt at varied complexities with little or no mistakes. I could still understand what you meant. Logic / Organization Wow! You sounded like a professional. All was organized, explained and supported by many examples details from resources. Hey, you made your point and supported it with a few details from our resources. Things were in order, coherent, and logical. Ok, I got it! Repeat please? What did you say? Used rich and descriptive vocabulary including connectors correctly with a few mistakes or misuses of the word. Stayed mainly in one simple tense. Few to many errors but none disrupted the me. Used vocabulary but few connectors, or very short simple sentences. Vocabulary very elementary but, you didn’t use English! Hmm, I needed to help you quite a bit to make it through. Many errors in the simple tenses. It was hard to understand. Hmm, I think you were confused on the topic and you didn’t give any examples. I saw some organization in the paragraphs but things were out of order. Made little or no effort at vocabulary or used English. I had to help you a lot! A few things were off topic or not logical but, didn’t interfere with what you meant. You attempted citing but were a little off. An opening, body, and conclusion were present I’m sorry, I didn’t understand anything you wrote. There was too much English and structures didn’t make sense. I’m sorry but that has nothing to do with the topic? There were no examples and I couldn’t tell where the body and main paragraphs were!
