Teaching – Lesson Content Year Group 4 Koala Scientific Enquiry Forces will be the main focus in science over the coming terms. Pupils will conduct practical investigations into how force effect everyday objects in the form of pushes, pulls and friction. Pupils will be encouraged to use their understanding of the world to make informed predictions that they will compare with their final results and findings. Start date Term 2 They will then work to design their own chocolate bar wrappers and a promotional poster to help launch their new chocolate bar. Term 3 ICT History Using the netbooks pupils will be able to complete an independent research project into a range of chocolate related areas including its history and the many different types. Koala class will look at the history of chocolate from its Aztec origins to its present well loved form. They will how it transformed from drink to the solid bar we enjoy today. Pupils will use maps and computer based programs to identify were chocolate originated and is produced, including where the raw ingredients are grown. They will also work to improve and refine their understanding of Publisher, working to design wrappers and promotional material for their new chocolate bars. Linking in with the Aztecs the class will learn about the Spanish invasion as led by Hernan Cortes and the subsequent downfall of the Aztec empire. They will look at the specific regional attributes that contribute towards being able to grow cocoa. Art & Design Pupils will look at a range of chocolate bar wrappers and advertising posters to see how manufacturers try to promote their products. Pupils will compare the different colours and fonts used to try to entice customers. End date Geography There will also be the opportunity to look at chocolate from different countries and how it differs to ours. Design Technology THEME Chocolate The chocolate topic will provide pupils with an interesting look at the history of chocolate, where it originated and how it is produced. They will have the opportunity to draft ideas for a new type of chocolate bar before working to produce and launch it. Having looked at the manufacturing process for chocolate, pupils will work to design moulds for their own chocolate bars. They will use plaster to help create casts of their mock bars. There will also be taste testing of different types of chocolate with pupils identifying different tastes and textures. From this Koala will work to create their own dream chocolate bar. Music PE MFL Koala class will continue to participate in the Dartford Choral Outreach program having very much their involvement during terms 1 and 2. Specialist coaches will provide coaching in multi-skills as pupils work to develop their general fitness and confidence on sporting activities. As with the previous terms the class will continue to learn a range of voice and singing techniques through fun games and activities, again building towards a show performance. Gymnastics will also be a focus of PE sessions with pupils working individually and in small groups to produce short floor and apparatus based routines. Pupils will continue practice basic French phrases building their confidence in their ability to give simple personal details. They will also look at the French number system and parts of the body helping to build their all round understanding of the language. Links will be made between food intake and energy used during exercise. Teaching Skills Content PSHE & Citizenship Koala class will continue to explore the area of bullying, working to understand the different forms it can take and the affects it can have. This will be linked to our Rights Respecting Schools charter. The Going for goals theme will provide opportunities for pupils to reflect on themselves as individuals, particularly their strengths as learners and how they learn most effectively.
