I am applying for this position because I know that I can play a supportive role not only to the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators but to my District 8 colleagues. I previously held the position of the Executive Board for the Assistant Principals, when I was an assistant principal, and everyone agreed that I did my job well because I attended all meetings at CSA Headquarters, I typed notes and minutes and emailed them to the former chairperson. I took pride in representing my fellow supervisors by voting as required during the monthly meetings. I believe that I can once again be the representative by attending meetings and supporting the Chair with whom I have excellent collegial and personal working relationship. I believe that these times require us to receive and pass up-to-date information to our supervisors so they are always well informed. It would be an undeserved honor and privilege to serve my colleague members of the CSA as a Delegate as we collectively strive to ensure that the children of the City of New York are served by the best schools led by the most able, creative, and resourceful administrators. Should the membership be crazy enough or want to exhibit that they have enough of a sense of humor to elect me, it would be my intention to contribute toward the CSA improving its communication with membership and augmenting CSA’s advocacy on behalf of the concerns of its present and future members. WILLIAM BASSELL Bill Bassell is in his 19th year as a high school principal and 33rd year in the school system. I seek the challenge to support CSA and its members to examine how we provide services and reconfigure to reflect a growing changing membership, and city organization. Despite current thinking, the problems of our schools, and above all of "school reform" are not the result of unions. I served as a teacher of Mathematics at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx for two years. Following this I went on to teach mathematics for the NYCDOE. I taught at MS82 for five years then moved on to a position as Assistant principal at in the middle school. At MS145, I received the coveted Mayor’s Proclamation Award for Black History month for the phenomenal work I have done for students and staff. I am impressed by Mr. Polubiec’s professionalism, dedication to his role as a public school supervisor, and to the innovative ways he has included technology in his vision to prepare students for the demands of the future. As an immigrant himself, Mr. Polubiec demonstrates a commitment to our immigrant and minority children by setting high expectations for his teachers and holding everyone accountable for their role in raising the level of education our students receive. Mr. Polubiec uses his knowledge of progressive teaching methodologies to inspire teachers to improve their instructional practices. KIMBERLEY SHELLEY This statement is to inform you of my interest in the Assistant Principal Elementary position 2013. I am a dedicated and passionate advocate who believes in fair and equitable treatment in the professional workplace. I believe in fighting for our schools, staff and students. As an executive member I will contribute to the many CSA causes by supporting the thousands of administrators affiliated with CSA. The contractual rights of administrators is most important, especially when you have outstanding leadership. As an Assistant Principal I have the opportunity to meet colleagues from all over the city and state. My networking has allowed me to better understand the many problems and concerns so many administrators have with health benefits, grievances, contracts and payroll mistakes. As a perspective nominee, I know that I can make a difference in the lives of our supporters, families and friends citywide. I will fight publicly for the welfare and sacrificed efforts to continue the legacy of those CSA members and officers who came before me. After my students and my work, there is nothing more important to me about my profession than our union. Across our nation factions insensible to the burdens we bear and the dedication we tender would like to make our lives more difficult than they already are. They rather blame us than respect us. They rather deny us rights and benefits than justly compensate us. Without our union, these factions would diminish us. Our union is a bulwark against ideological forces that strike at public education and our livelihood. I am running for Executive Board member because I believe in unionism; I believe in public education; and I believe we deserve to be honored professionals. Thank you in advance for your vote and your trust. NICHOLAS COMO I have been an educator in the New York City public school system for nineteen years; the last ten as an assistant principal at the Brooklyn Studio Secondary School. I have been fortunate enough to have worked under some amazing principals such as Harold Epstein and Martin Fiasconaro who have allowed me the opportunities to learn and grow as an administrator and to see the public school system through a more global perspective. I am eager to learn more about the union I have been a part of fot the past ten years and to learn more about how my affiliation with such a group can assist me in becoming a better supervisor and educator for my school, my school community and the entire New York City public school system. I hope that I will be considered for the opportunity to run for this position. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you. ALEXIS MARRERO As a youth, growing up in the New York City public school system, I had many obstacles to overcome in order to reach my full potential. We are expected to be experts in our field and are consistently held accountable with insurmountable work responsibilities without clearly defined work roles, in a continuously revolving, compliance driven DOE. I look forward to representing our plight to the best of my ability to a better end for our current and future members. I thank you for this opportunity. DR. RENEE RAINES Dr. M. ORLANDO RODRIGUEZ Orlando Rodriguez, has been an Educational Administrator for thirteen years and a CSA Assistant Chair in the Bronx for 8 years. He is a passionate and vocal supporter for EAs and would serve us well in the CSA Executive Board. Orlando is an investigator, he is not afraid to step forth and carry our voice from the field to the ears of the Executive Board of CSA. Orlando is very diligent in seeking answers to questions that he does not have an immediate answer. He will research, call and inquire until he receives an answer that is appropriate for the membership. We need individuals like Orlando to advocate for EAs, he is truly the epitome of great or good leadership for all of his constituents. DENISE SCHIRA Denise Schira has worked for NYCDOE almost 20 years- 7 as an administrator, 4 as an Education Administrator. I am currently a Director of Student Support Services with CFN 207. I provide support to 25 Schools in Queens in the areas of: Youth Development, Suspension, Attendance, Safety, 311, and Family Engagement. I’ve been a C.S.A. member since 1997. Since July 1, 2003, we have seen a continuous change among Education Administrators CityWide. As our numbers have increased, it appears that there is less uniformity as far as our role. The level of uncertainty is greater now then at any other time in our history. Education Administrators play a critical role in supporting all schools to achieve success. We need greater unity to ensure that our voices are heard. I pledge if elected, that the communication with Education Administrators be a priority. SAMUEL ZIMMERMAN With the background of a former assistant principal of operations and currently an educational administrator (ASE) supporting schools around the special education reform, reflective collaborative practices among the different offices of the NYC Department of Education has been critical in addressing school concerns and more importantly identifying solutions to support both school and student achievement. The position of advocacy is required for ourselves, our students, our schools and principals, in addressing citywide policies or initiatives that do not fully support the mission of the highest level of education and schools for all students. Over the last two school years, in collaboration with different Supervisors of Related Services, School Psychologists, and other networks – I (in partnership with my colleagues) have been successful in identifying areas of improvement around the delivery of special education initiatives, the language of policies to ensure schools receive needed resources, professional development supports, and are insulated from unnecessary tasks that will not benefit the highest need students.
