Telephone: 713-743-0927
Office: 612 Agnes Arnold Hall
Office Hours: Tuesday and Wednesday 12.00- 1.00pm
Objectives of the course:
The goal of French 2301 is to reinforce all structures learned in first-year French and to
continue to build on them. Focus will be placed on all aspects of the target language:
listening, reading, speaking and writing.
The student will be expected to use French in the classroom as much as possible.
- Frequent readings will be assigned with the aim of developing comprehension and good
pronunciation as well as insight into French culture.
- Compositions and summaries are based on the readings. Other topics will help the
students to achieve accuracy in written French.
Specific course goals:
- To explore cultural similarities and variations within and between Francophone and US
culture in a specified number of domains (i.e. national, regional and geographic identity;
cultural and linguistic identity; socio-economic/class identity).
- To promote the development of reading and listening skills through the study of
authentic cultural texts (visuals, current newspaper articles, official documents, films).
- To improve speaking and writing skills through a variety of assignments and in class
activities designed to encourage the students to reflect upon, interpret and react to social
and economic issues, current events and trends.
Communicative goals of Second year French first semester:
1. Asking questions
2. Describing and comparing
3. Narrating in the past – preterit, imperfect, plus perfect
Textbooks:
- Interaction, Révision de grammaire française, 7ème édition

Homework:
- Homework will be assigned daily. Assignments will be based on readings, chapters in
Interaction text or Cahier d’exercices, class presentations and internet activities.
- Note culturelle should be read before class. From time to time, preparations of
dictations will be assigned.
- All assignments have to be completed on time.
- It is crucial to organize your study time for a given class over two consecutive class
days rather than concentrating on a single class at a time. Always begin a study session
by reviewing materials from the previous lesson.
- Prepare a list of pertinent questions to ask your instructor.
Cahier de vocabulaire: Students should maintain a vocabulary notebook.
Exams: There will be in-class tests, and one cumulative, three-hour final. Students are
required to be present on exam days as there will be no make-up exams.
Language Acquisition Center:
Plan to work at the language acquisition center at least two hours per week in order to accomplish
the activities in each chapter of the Cahier d’exercises. You can also do the oral exercises via
WebCT. For further information please contact the language acquisition center, 3rd floor AH. The
audio program corresponds to exercices oraux in the Cahier d’exercices. Lab work is mandatory as
you will be tested on certain components of the cahier d’exercices. Students are strongly
encouraged to work on Systeme D activities in the lab.
Attendance:
Students are required to attend classes every day. Students will be dropped after four
unexcused absences. If a student decides not to take the class, it will be his/her
responsibility to drop the class. If his/her name appears on the registrar’s final roll,
he/she will receive an automatic grade of “F”.
Disability policy:
Any student with either a physical impairment or learning disability who requires
accommodation in this course should immediately consult with the instructor and contact
the Office of Students with Disabilities at 713 743-5400. The office is located in the
Student Service Center.
Cell phone policy:
Cell phones are to be turned off during class time, unless you are the parent of a young
child in daycare or with a babysitter. The cell phone may ring for emergencies only.
Final Grade Computation:
20% Attendance and well-prepared and active class participation
20% Homework
20% Quizzes, contractions de textes, dictées préparées
