1. use context clues, word parts, and dictionary skills to define and correctly use new vocabulary words
2. identify and analyze elements within a novel including plot, characterization, setting, theme, and conflict
3. analyze segments of a novel using close reading strategies
4. cite textual evidence as support for answers related to a novel
5. participate in small group and whole class discussions
Monday, 5/12/14
Instructional Strategies:
1. Opener: Copy homework in your agenda.
2. Return and discuss Friday’s reading quiz on chapters 15 and 16 of The Cay.
3. Revisit and complete the “Theme” activity, having students use pair/share. Discuss students’ responses as a class.
4. Begin reading chapters 17-19 of The Cay as a class, pausing to discuss events, characters, setting, and theme.

Tuesday, 5/13/14
Instructional Strategies:
1. Opener: Require students to use context clues to complete sentences with vocabulary words.
2. Finish reading chapters 17-19 of The Cay, pausing to discuss events, characters, setting, and theme.
3. Administer the reading quiz for chapters 17-19.
Homework: Begin reviewing for Thursday’s final test on The Cay. Study vocabulary words for Friday’s final review.

Wednesday, 5/14/14
Instructional Strategies:
1. Opener: Require students to use context clues to complete sentences with vocabulary words.
2. Return and discuss yesterday’s reading quiz on chapters 17-19.
3. Briefly review conflict using the English 7 Resource Guide.
4. Distribute and complete a conflict assignment, gradually moving from pair/share to independent practice.
5. With any remaining time, discuss the format of the final test and answer any questions.
Homework: Review for tomorrow’s final test on The Cay. Study vocabulary words for Friday’s final review.

1. Administer the open-ended theme question for the final test on The Cay.
2. As they finish the open-ended item, have students pick up and complete the final vocabulary review for The Cay,
allowing students to use their vocabulary packets.
3. Monitor students as they complete the assessments.
