What Would Jesus Say To… Katy Perry – Part 6 September 21, 2014 Pastor Virgil Next week is going to be epic I will interview Darrin Horn (pic of Darrin that is on back of program). You know, there are some people in life that are just flat out likeable. It doesn’t matter what they say, it doesn’t matter what they do. It does not really matter if you personally know them or not, they’re just likeable. That’s Katy Perry. (pic of Katy Perry can be on the screen) “Being a kid in my household consisted of going to a lot of church activities, hanging out with a lot of church kids, and anything that had to do with God was A-OK.” Katy Perry (put pic of Katy Perry back on the screen) When you think of women who are BIG name musicians who do you tend to think of? (Put up pics of each one of these Celine, Mariah, Whitney, Madonna, and Brittany). What would Jesus say to Katy Perry? “I like your independence.” True independence really comes from your dependency on me. When we forget about our dependency on God we step out of the provision and the protection that God offers. Jesus tells a story to a group of people found in Luke 15. Jesus begins to tell them this story about a young man. (PIC of the prodigal son) In our pursuit of independence we forget that our dependency is on God. Proverbs 22:6 (ESV) “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 6:20 (ESV) “My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching.” What would Jesus say to Katy Perry? “I really like your creativity.” Man, the set designs, the costumes, the word play with your lyrics, it’s all creative. It’s incredible! It takes a great mind to come up with those things. You know, Katy, I’m a pretty Page 1 of 2 creative person, too. I created creativity. If I’m going to be honest with you, your creativity, the creativity I have given you, has given you a huge platform. And what I want you to do is to leverage that platform for me.” (pic of big stage/platform with Katy on the platform) PLATFORM PRIDE When pride walks onto the stage, God will walk off every single time. Job 20:6-7 (NIV) “Though the pride of the godless person reaches to the heavens and his head touches the clouds, he will perish forever, like his own dung; those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’” God doesn’t want to compete with our platform; he wants to complete our platform. What would Jesus say to Katy Perry? “I like your ambition.” Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV) “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV) “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Page 2 of 2
