Walking Course Syllabus - - Instructor: Kay L. Foster MED, ATC, LAT Description: This course is designed for students to participate in a daily walking program. Students will be expected to participate daily, keep an exercise record sheet, and analyze their performance throughout this 9 week course. Participation will be in an outdoor environment irregardless of the weather!! Scheduled off campus trips are included. Permission slips will need parent signature! Objectives: The students will be able to: 1. Participate daily in a walking program as a mode of exercise. to improve cardiovascular fitness and promote changes in body composition. 2. Demonstrate training principles to improve cardiovascular fitness and body composition. 3. Analyze how intensity, duration, and frequency effect the benefits of cardiovascular exercise. Materials: Grading: *Appropriate walking shoes (has to be tennis shoes and NOT street shoes) *Appropriate dress for the current weather conditions for the day *Folder/Pen 50% - Participation 20% - Exercise Record Sheet, Heart Rate Sheet (daily record turned in ever week) 20% - Written Tests, 1 Mile Walk Test, & Presidential Fitness Testing 10% - Written Final Exam Course Policy: 1. Respect yourself and others. 2. Uniform: No cut off shorts , shirts or boxer shorts. Shorts must have elastic band. Length of short must hang pass mid thigh be worn on hips (not off the hip), and full size T-shirt waist length. The clothing should not display any drug, tobacco, alcohol advertisement, or profanity. No black soled shoes!! Long hair needs to be tied back. Warm clothes such as sweatshirts, sweatpants, coats, mittens, and stocking hats should be at hand during cold weather months. 3. Cell phone use is non-negotiable in the locker rooms or during activity. DON’T DO IT!! 4. This is a fragrance free school Course Procedures: Participation is defined as appropriately dressed for fitness activities for the day, and performing the fitness activities for the entire exercise session. Check the weather forecast daily so you will know how to dress for that days fitness activity. Plan on going outside!! 10 points/day = ~500 points/term -30 points NO DRESS POLICY (1x: Conference 2x: Phone call/counselor 3x+: Referral) -05 points for not being ready for class -04 Restroom Usage -?? points for attitude, behavior, lack of participation, doing your own thing, defiant behavior, etc. Additional Information: If any additional help is needed I am in Room 123 at 7:45 in the morning.
