ADDITIONAL FACTFILE
FACTFILE: In 1982 opponents of legalized abortion succeeded in gaining a
proposed amendment to the Constitution that would allow the states to prohibit
abortions. The "pro-life" amendment was designed to overturn a 1973 Supreme
Court ruling that legalized abortions. It was defeated in the Senate in 1983.
