Say Yes to College is a college experience event for high school students with disabilities,
presently in grades 10, 11, and 12, being held at Old Dominion University, May 30 -31,
2008.
This is a collaborative event by The Virginia Department of Education’s Training and
Technical Assistance Centers (T/TACs) at Old Dominion University (ODU) and the College
of William & Mary (W & M), Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS),
Virginia Assistive Technology System (VATS), The Endependence Center, Inc (ECI),
Norfolk State University (NSU), ODU and Tidewater Community College (TCC), and
school divisions throughout Superintendent’s Regions 2 and 3.
Students with disabilities (those who have an IEP or 504 plan) who are planning to
secure a two or four year college degree are invited to register for this event. Applicants must be
current high school sophomores, juniors, or seniors pursuing an Advanced Studies, Standard,
Modified Standard Diploma, or students of high school age seeking a GED. Parents of
registered students for this event are also encouraged to attend. This two-day program includes
workshops, breakout sessions, guest speakers, the latest assistive technology, and hands-on
activities for both the students with disabilities as well as their parents. The topics of these
sessions will include preparing children for success in higher education, understanding parents’
changing legal status preparing children for life away from home, preventing victimization on
college campuses, and much more.

Say YES to College participants will experience life in a dormitory setting, connect with
other college students and mentors, and meet other students with disabilities who have
successfully transitioned into the college life. Students and parents are encouraged to register
before May 1 to ensure a position for this event as participation is limited. For more information
