David Robert Beckham was born in Leytonstone, London on May 2nd, 1975. Keen on football from very
early on, David won the Bobby Charlton Soccer Skills Award when he was 11. Five years later, at the age of 16,
he signed on as a trainee at Manchester United Football Club. The following year, he made his first appearance as
a substitute but it was another three years before he started playing full-time in the Premier League.
He established himself as a quality player in the 1995/96 season and, in his midfield right position, the
number 7 helped his team to win the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.
In 1996 he started playing for the England senior team and the year ended with him being voted Young
Player of the Year.
Beckham (nicknamed Becks) was going from strength to strength and it was no surprise that he was
picked to play in the 1998 World Cup in France. By now he had become more than just a footballer, with as many
girl fans as boy fans. He also had an attractive pop - star girlfriend, Victoria Adams, who was known to fans of the
Spice Girls as Posh Spice.
In 1999, his son Brooklyn was born and he married Victoria. In the same year, he was voted the second
best player in the world after Rivaldo, the outstanding Barcelona and Brazil player.

The girl who reads aloud
BEIJING- Most mornings, while a noisy queue of traffic is driving slowly along the Third Ring Road into the city
centre, a girl called Ouyang Junying leaves her flat and stands beside the road. She turns away from the traffic,
opens a book, and starts reading aloud.
It is one of the worst traffic jams in the city, but Ms. Ouyang, 29, has been doing this every morning for
nearly five years. She is studying English and believes that the noise helps her to concentrate.
It is also the reason why she has become a sort of celebrity. For thousands of motorists, she is ‘The Girl
Who Reads Aloud’. While she is reading, the rest of Beijing stares at her and wonders, ‘Who is this young
woman? How long has she been standing there? And why is she reading in such a terrible place?’
In Beijing, there are 15 million people living in very small flats, so there are lots of people in the city
parks, doing everything from tai chi to ballroom dancing. But Ms. Ouyang doesn’t like the parks. “If I study in a
park, people always watch me and I don’t feel comfortable. But if cars pass me in the street, I don’t care,’ she
says.
Ms. Ouyang, the daughter of a poor farmer, came to Beijing in 1995 to look for work. She has had a
number of different jobs. She has also been studying English for nearly ten years, because she hopes that it will
get her a better job with better money. Recently she has been on local T.V! She has become famous as a person
who always works hard and tries her best.
Since the T.V programme, she has had a new job. She has been helping an architect in his work. And
what has she been doing? Teaching him English, of course!

Section B: Read the following passage and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F)
according to the information in the passage.
Sand and wind may destroy the huge statue on the outskirts of Cairo. This statue of the sun god has the
body of a lion and the face of a human being. It is five thousands years old, but it is too badly damaged to be
completely saved. The statue has been already dug out of the sand three times. However, the latest problems are
much more serious. First, there are no proper drains and water pipes in the neighbourhood and the underground passages
round the statue have become blocked. Too much water has been running into the stone statue for several years. As a
result, tiny pieces of salt have been left on the stone and have damaged it. Secondly, air pollution from the increasing
amount of traffic in Cairo is also destroying the ancient statue. The air is so full of poisonous gases that it is making the
stone crumble and decay even faster. Thirdly, the statue is being damaged by extremes of temperature, for example,
although the air is very cold at night, during the day the stone of the statue becomes very hot under the strong sun. Other
natural forces such as severe sandstorms also attack the statue.
Write true (T) or false (F) for each sentence. If the information is not given, write NI.
1- The statue of the sun god was built for religious reasons.
2- The statue is situated in the center of Cairo.
3- Part of the statue looks like a lion and part like a person.
4- The statue was built 5000 years ago.
5- People have covered the statue with sand on three occasions in the past to save it.
6- Small pieces of salt have been put on the stone of the statue to prevent further damage.
7- High temperatures damage stone far more than low temperatures.
8- People have used the statue to hide from their attackers in the past.
Section B: Read the following passage and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F)
according to the information in the passage.
Do smaller classes really help ?
In an experiment in Canada, ten-year-old children were put in classes for four sizes: 16,23,30 and
37children in each class. Their teachers said that the smaller classes would result in more individual attention and
better marks. However, when the children were tested, these in the smaller classes didn’t get higher marks than
the others, except in Mathematics. Moreover, pupils in the larger classes said that they liked school just as much.
Perhaps, the most surprising result was the difference between what teachers expected and the actual results
obtained. More than 90% of the teachers expected the smaller classes to do well. After teaching these smaller
classes, over 80% of the teachers thought the pupils had done better, However, according to the rearchers,
nothing of the sort happened. Class size seemed to make a difference only to the teachers own attitudes – and not
to the results they obtain. There may be three seasons for this. First, teachers may be used to teaching large classes
and may not know how to get the best results from small classes. Secondly, the results of teaching pupils in
small classes may take a year to show. Thirdly, even a class containing sixteen pupils is really a large class, and
real improvement can only be made with classes of fewer than a dozen pupils.
Write True (T) or False (F) for each sentence. If the information is not given, write N I.
1- The results of children in larger classes were much better than those of children in smaller classes.
……………………………………………………………………………………………….
2- Children in smaller classes generally liked school much better than those in larger classes.
……………………………………………………………………………………………….
3- Children in smaller classes liked mathematics more than those in larger classes.
……………………………………………………………………………………………….
4- Most teachers of smaller classes did not think that their pupils had done better than those in larger classes.
……………………………………………………………………………………………….
5- The writer thinks that even the smallest of the four classes taking part in the experiment was really a large
class.
