Biology (Science II) Unit I. The Nature of Biology Time Frame: 1 week and 3 days Competencies 3. Appreciate the contribution of Filipino and foreign scientists in the development of Biology and biotechnology Lesson 5: Foreign Scientists in Biology I. Subject Matter: Foreign Scientists in Biology Time Frame: 1 period Reference: Rabago, L. M., Joaquin, C. C., & Lagunzad, C. B., (1997). Science and technology : Biology. Metro Manila: SD Publication, INC. pp. 16. Department of Education, Culture and Sports. Instructional Materials Corporation. Science and technology II. Teacher’s Manual. 1st ed. Quezon City: IMDC. II. Objectives: 1. 2. 3. III. Name foreign scientists in the field of Biology Describe the contributions of foreign biologists Recognize the scientific attitudes of diligence and patience of foreign scientists in the field of Biology Materials: For Teaching Pictures of Filipino and foreign scientists BSE-Department of Education 19 IV. Lesson Proper: Recall Show pictures of the following Filipino scientists. Let the students identify them and describe their outstanding contributions in the field of Biology: 1. 2. 3. B. Emerita De Guzman Carmen Velasquez William Padolina 4. 5. Angel Alcala Pedro Escuro Motivation Divide the students into small groups with a maximum of four students per group. Distribute pictures of foreign scientists to the groups. Each picture is covered with cut-out pieces of paper. Let the students remove the covering in each picture to reveal the photograph of a foreign scientist. Ask the following questions to the students. Sample Questions: 1. 2. 3. C. Who is the person in the picture? If the person in the picture is a foremost biologist, describe his contribution in the field of Biology. Name other foreign biologists and their contribution in the field of Biology. Activity: Group Discussion Let students form a small group of four members. Ask them to discuss on foreign biologists and their contributions in the field of Biology. Divide the students into small groups with a maximum of four students per group. Let the students in each group discuss particular foreign scientists and their contributions in Biology. The teacher will see to it that there is no duplication of scientist among the different groups. The following is the list of foreign scientists with significant contributions in Biology. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) Gregor Mendel Louis Pasteur Rudolf Virchow Charles Darwin Alexander Flemming William Harvey Joseph Lister Carolus Linnaeus (9) (10) (11) (12) (13) (14) (15) Robert Koch Anton Van Leeuwenhoek Robert Hooke Edward Jenner Albert Sabin James Watson Francis Crick While the groups are discussing their designated foreign scientists, the teacher posts questions on the walls inside the classroom. After the group discussion, the teacher calls on representatives from each group to describe the designated foreign scientists and their contributions in the field of Biology. The teacher calls 20 BSE-Department of Education on other students to pick out and answer a posted question on the wall. If the answer is correct, the student gives the question to the teacher. If the answer is wrong, the student posts the question back on the wall. Sample Questions: Question 1. He is a British naturalist who worked on the theory of evolution and natural selection. Answer: Charles Darwin Question 2: He discovered the bacteria that cause anthrax, tuberculosis and cholera. Answer: Robert Koch D. Postlaboratory Discussion Guess the Scientist After the group discussions, the teacher calls on representatives from each group to describe their group’s designated foreign scientist and his/her contribution in Biology. The teacher calls on other students to pick out and answer a posted question on the wall. If the answer is correct, the student gives the question to the teacher. If the answer is wrong, the student posts the question back on the wall. E. Generalization The famous scientists who have made significant contributions in the field of Biology are in Table I. Table 1. Foreign Scientists In the Field of Biology Foreign Scientist Gregor Mendel Louis Pasteur Rudolf Virchow Charles Darwin Sir Alexander Flemming William Harvey Robert Koch Carolus Linnaeus Joseph Lister Edwar Jenner BSE-Department of Education Significant Contribution in Biology father of heredity and the basic laws of inheritance; an Austrian monk father of bacteriology; developed vaccine against rabies; French chemist and microbiologist father of modern pathology; contributed to the cell theory; German medical naturalist worked on the theory of evolution and natural selection; British naturalist discovered penicillin as an antibiotic; Scottish bacteriologist discovered the mechanics of human blood circulation; English physician discovered bacteria causing anthrax, tuberculosis and cholera; German microbiologist father of taxonomy; Swedish naturalist and botanist highlighted the importance of antiseptic in surgery; British medical doctor and surgeon worked on smallpox vaccine 21 Anton Van Leeuwenhoek Albert Sabin Robert Hooke James D. Watson Francis H.C. Crick F. designed compound microscopes with high magnification which led to microbiology, the study of microscopic life; Dutch naturalist discovered vaccine against polio virus gave the name “cells” for structures he saw under the microscope with Crick, described the double helix structure of DNA; American biologist with Watson, described the double helix structure of DNA; British biophysicist Valuing or Application Imagine that you live at the time before the discoveries and breakthroughs in Biology have been made, how would your life be different compared to your present existence? Why? G. Assessment Match the foreign scientist in Set A with the significant contribution in Biology in Set B: Set A 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Set B Gregor Mendel Edward Jenner Louis Pasteur Alexander Flemming William Harvey a. b. c. d. e. Discovered smallpox vaccine Discovered penicillin Discovered mechanics of human blood circulation Father of heredity Discovered rabies vaccine Answers: 1. 2. 3. d a e 4. 5. b e IV. Agreement: Assigned students should do readings on the different types of compound microscope. 22 BSE-Department of Education Activity 5. Foreign Biologists and their Work In this activity, you will study the work of some world-famous biologists and see how their findings have helped improve the quality of human life. Objectives 1. 2. 3. Present the works of some world-famous biologists Suggest some desirable traits which a scientist or a science student should cultivate Discuss the importance of the contributions of the world-famous biologists Procedure 1. Students form small groups with a maximum of four members per group. 2. The members in each group discuss a particular world-famous scientist and his/her contributions to Biology. 3. After the discussion, each group will introduce and present a scientist and his/her work to the rest of the class. BSE-Department of Education 23
