Class Description
Introduction to Art is a foundation art appreciation course. Through the slide/lecture format this
course introduces the student to a wide variety of art forms and concepts. Examples of art from
throughout the world and throughout history are discussed. In Salamanca we will use the local
art, architecture and crafts as our examples.
The course is divided into three units: art ideas and styles, art media and techniques, and art
history. We will examine why people make art, how we can appreciate art from cultures in
addition to our own, and in what ways art reflects the culture from which it comes.
Learning Outcomes
 The student will become more knowledgeable in historical aspects of the art world.
 The student will be more knowledgeable about art and art-related terminology.
 The student will be more aware of the role of the artist in societies.
 The student will be more aware of the societal role of art and architecture.
Tests are given based on readings, videos, discussions, class lectures etc. Students will write
a paper on a subject related to course content. Quizzes will be given based on reading
assignments. Students can expect to spend at least 1-2 hours outside class for every hour in
class (5-10 hours/week.)
