English 8 and 9

English 8 and 9 will help you develop the skills and knowledge you need for effective communication. You will learn to o communicate effectively in written, spoken and visual forms o think creatively, critically and reflectively o develop positive attitudes about your learning o make connections with other areas of study and to your life outside the classroom o appreciate your own and other peoples’ cultures.

Your teacher will use three big ideas – curriculum organizers – to guide the classroom activities in the junior English program at North Delta.

Comprehend and Respond : You will o develop strategies and skills in reading literature and reading for information o become a confident and capable reader o become aware of a variety of written genres including stories, graphs, poems, news and magazine articles, library and internet material o identify and interpret the effects of various literary techniques including figurative language o learn strategies to help you become a critical thinker

Communicate Ideas and Information : You will o learn how to shape your ideas and focus your thinking o develop skills to help you explain clearly, tell a story well, to describe accurately and vividly, and to summarize effectively o practice a variety of writing formats including brainstorming, paragraphs, memos, idea clusters, outlines, concept maps o become a confident and thoughtful thinker, speaker and writer o learn how to represent your learning in a variety of ways

Self and Society : You will o become aware of how you learn o become aware of your strengths and achievements and build on them as you grow as a thinker and learner o learn how to be a positive and respectful advocate for yourself and your peers

In addition, you will complete several activities which will fulfill the requirements for the

“Healthy Relationships” section of the Grade 8 and 9 Health and Career Education (i.e.

HACE) course. These lessons will focus on helping you o develop strategies for building and maintaining healthy relationships o respond to bullying or discrimination o become more confident

Learning Structures and Strategies:

Your teacher will help you succeed in English by using many teaching/learning tools including o Think - (Ink) - Pair – Share o Placemat o Inside/Outside Circles o Numbered Heads o Round Robin o Four Corners

Reading Strategies:

Your teacher will model, practice and reinforce the development of many reading strategies including o Accessing background knowledge o Predicting what will happen o Self-monitoring and self-correcting o Extracting information from text and visuals o Summarizing what has been read o Making inferences and drawing conclusions

Assessment and Evaluation:

This is where you will learn how well you are doing and how to improve. Your teacher will establish clear and realistic expectations of what you need to know and what you need to do in English.

Letter grades -- reflect academic achievement – Your teacher will assess student performances, projects, tests, reports, reading and writing samples. Assessment tools will include scoring rubrics, role assignments, quizzes, exams and teacher/student designed criteria assessments. Letter grades will be assigned according to the Ministry of

Education guidelines which include:

Work habit marks

—reflect attitude and attendance. In assessing work habits your teacher will include use of class time, oral participation in class discussions, homework completion and attitude. Assessment will be based on the BC Performance

Standards for Social Responsibility.
