Details of how to access the practice are available within a printable guide as is a map detailing local car parks. The practice is also on the Basingstoke Park and Ride route. For those patients who are able to access Basingstoke
Community Transport, details of their rates and contact details are accessible here.

We do not offer private GP services from our premises, however, we are keen to promote those services that cannot be provided by the NHS from our premises, or those that are in short supply. Sore Throats
Most sore throats are caused by a virus infection which antibiotics cannot cure. With simple treatment the patient normally gets better in four or five days. Tonsillitis usually starts with a sore throat, which causes pain on swallowing. There may be a fever, it might be possible to see white spots on the tonsils and glands in the neck may be swollen and painful. A hoarse voice, dry cough and sore throat indicates a viral laryngitis.
TREATMENT
Adults: Use regular Paracetamol or Ibuprofen. Drink plenty of fluids and take steam inhalations.
Children: Paracetamol liquid (Calpol or Disprol) plenty of drinks.Make an appointment to see the doctor if the sore throat is getting worse after two days, or if the patient complains of earache.
Feverish Child
Children often develop feverish illnesses, which settle spontaneously in 24-
48 hours.
TREATMENT
Give paracetamol ( Calpol, Disprol) liquid. Remove child’s clothing and offer regular sips of cool water. Sponging with tepid water may also help to reduce the temperature. Do not give aspirin to children under 12. Make an appointment to see the doctor if the temperature does not fall after a paracetamol (although it may rise again later) or if the child becomes drowsy or obviously unwell.
Stuffy or Runny Nose
The common cold usually starts with a hot feeling in the back of the throat.
The patient feels unwell and aches, and the nose starts running with a clear liquid which becomes a thick yellow discharge after three to four days. ANTIBIOTICS DO NOT HELP .
TREATMENT
As for sore throat. Babies and young children often have repeated colds.
This helps them build up their resistance to infection. They cough because of the discharge running from the nose down the back of the throat. Do not give cough linctus. Try normal saline nose drops, two drops in each nostril before bed.
Coughs
If dust or food enters the air passages, coughing acts as a protector. It also prevents mucus from causing infection on the chest. To suppress this action with cough mixtures can cause more harm than good.
TREATMENT
For dry coughs a linctus can be bought from the chemist. Make an appointment to see the doctor if coughing continues for more than a week or two after a common cold has cleared up, if coughing produces a yellow or green sputum – it may mean the lower air passages are infected, if breathing is accompanied by a pain in the chest or shortness of breath, or if coughing produces blood.
Vomiting
Vomiting may be caused by a virus infection of the stomach, food poisoning and by eating or drinking too much. It normally stops within 24 hours and may be followed by diarrhoea. Some children will vomit when they have a temperature.
TREATMENT
Rest. Eat nothing for 24 hours. Drink small sips of water regularly. As the stomach settles try bread or clear soup before gradually returning to a normal diet. Children and Infants: Try
Dioralyte sachets made up with cooled boiled water to replace body fluids. Make an appointment to see the doctor if vomiting is accompanied by continuous stomach pain, if vomiting lasts for longer than 24 hours, or if a vomiting child has a temperature of more than
38C (100F).
Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is unpleasant but rarely dangerous. It may be due to change of diet, food poisoning or travel abroad. It is often accompanied by colicky (cramp-like) pains and usually begins to get better in 48 hours.
TREATMENT
As for vomiting (see above). Make an appointment to see the doctor if it does not start to settle after 48 hours, if an attack comes shortly after a visit abroad, or if there is continuous pain or blood.
If you are unsure about these or any other medical matters feel free to contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Crown Heights Medical Centre is not simply focussed on treating you and your ailments, we want to develop the practice into much more than that and with that in mind, we want engage more with our patients.
How do we start? To be honest, I don't know where to start, although I have been involved in setting them up before, but to be honest, no two are the same and the best process that I can think of is to listen to the patients, doctors, nurses, reception staff and even the ubiquitous manager. To whet your appetite you may wish to look at this 10 minute guide to give you an insight on what we might achieve in partnership.
Want to be involved, or simply want to know more, then please contact stefan.morawiec@nhs.net for more details.
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.
It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because travel vaccination is not included in the services provided by the NHS and therefore is a chargeable service. A scale of fees is available for items which we charge for.
Travel Health Questionnaire
To help us offer the appropriate advice, please fill out the online form before coming to see the
nurse.
Travel Questionnaire (Please note that we are experiencing some technical difficulties at the moment with this element of our administration - the forms are being received blank and you may get a request to re-submit it - this matter is being dealt with)
PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service)
The NHS employs over a million staff in thousands of locations. It is a large and complex organisation providing a broad range of services. It is not surprising that sometimes you or a loved one may feel bewildered or concerned when using the NHS. And this can be at times when you are feeling at your most vulnerable and anxious.
So, what should you do if you want on the spot help when using the health service? The NHS expects all members of staff to listen and respond to you to the best of their ability. But sometimes, you may wish to talk to someone employed especially to help you. The Patient
Advice and Liaison Service, known as PALS, has been introduced to ensure that the NHS listens to patients, their relatives, carers and friends, and answers their questions and resolves their concerns as quickly as possible.
PALS also helps the NHS to improve services by listening to what matters to patients and their loved ones and making changes, when appropriate.
What does PALS do?
In particular, PALS will:
Provide you with information about the NHS and help you with any other health-related enquiry
Help resolve concerns or problems when you are using the NHS
Provide information about the NHS complaints procedure and how to get independent help if you decide you may want to make a complaint
Provide you with information and help introduce you to agencies and support groups outside the NHS
Inform you about how you can get more involved in your own healthcare and the NHS locally
Improve the NHS by listening to your concerns, suggestions and experiences and ensuring that people who design and manage services are aware of the issues you raise
Provide an early warning system for NHS Trusts and monitoring bodies by identifying problems or gaps in services and reporting them.

If you would like more information about PALS, the functions it is intended to provide and the standards it should strive to achieve , follow this link.
What is Choose and Book?
Choose and Book is a new service that allows you to choose your hospital or clinic and book an appointment with a specialist.
Since summer 2004, Choose and Book has been introduced across England. It will eventually be available to all patients.
From 1 January 2006, when you and your GP agree that you need to see a specialist, you will be able to choose from at least four hospitals or clinics. You will also be able to choose the date and time of your appointment.
The benefits of Choose and Book:
You can choose from at least four hospitals
You can also choose the date and time for your appointment.
You experience greater convenience and certainty. With the old system, your hospital or clinic chose the date and time of your appointment. This may not have been convenient for you. With Choose and Book, the choice is yours.
There is less chance that information will get lost in the post because more correspondence takes place through computers.
For more information see the Choose & Book NHS Website
We are constantly seeking to improve the services that we offer to you as our patients and are currently engaged in setting up a Chlamydia screening service to offer for our patients. Chlamydia is a bacterial infection, which can infect individuals who have or who are sexually active and is transmitted from partner to partner.
The symptoms range from no symptoms at all and vary between male and female:
Women
In women, genital chlamydia does not often cause any symptoms. However, some women may have 'non-specific symptoms' such as:
cystitis, a change in their vaginal discharge, and mild lower abdominal pain.
If you visit your GP, or family planning doctor with any of these symptoms, you can ask to have a chlamydia test taken, even if you are not offered one.
If left untreated, the chlamydia infection may lead to the following symptoms:
pelvic pain, pain during sexual intercourse, or occasionally, bleeding between periods.
The chlamydial infection can also spread to the womb, and cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
(PID). PID is a major cause of infertility, ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage.
Men
A man with chlamydia commonly experiences a urethral discharge from the penis.
You may also have inflammation of the tube leading from the bladder to the tip of the penis
(urethritis), and inflammation of the tube leading from the testes to the penis (epididymitis).
You may also experience mild irritation at the end of your penis that will usually disappear after two or three days. However, after the discomfort disappears, you may still have the chlamydia infection. This means that you can pass it on to a sexual partner. You also risk the complication of inflamed and swollen testicles.
In rare cases, chlamydia can also cause an uncommon condition that affects the eyes and joints, known as Reiters syndrome. Chlamydia can also cause fertility problems in men, approximately half of all men with symptoms have impaired fertility, such as epididymitis.

Lychpit Surgery is the branch surgery of Crown Heights Medical Centre, situated some 2.8 miles away from the main Crown Heights premises on Great Binfields Road, Lychpit,
Basingstoke.
The practice is located above the Tesco convenience store and adjacent to the Lychpit
Community Hall. (Printable Map). You can easily plan your journey via public transport, walking or by car through following the route link via Transport Direct.
The practice is well appointed and will be undergoing some minor refurbishement over the next two years.
It offers a full range of routine primary care services, from 2 GP consulting rooms and a practice nursing suite. With convenient parking adjacent to the site, the practice initially served the population of Lychpit, but increasingly is visited by Crown Heights patients who have difficulty accessing the Crown Heights facility. We are happy to register new patients here or at the main surgery
In essence, the branch surgery offers a good health facility for the Lychpit community and those patients who prefer not to travel into the town centre. It provides an alternative to registering with another practice and allows tpatients to continue their long-term relationship with a GP they know and more importantly, who knows them.

Crown Heights Medical Centre is constantly seeking to attract NHS services to its premises and these are expanding all of the time. Unfortunately we cannot always attract these services to our premises or they are simply not always available via the NHS. With this in mind we are currently in negotation with a local osteopath and a pychotherapist and counsellor and are seeking to offer a biomechanical podiatry service in the future.
We are delighted to advise you of the fact that we now have osteopathy services available at the practice from a local osteopath who has been working in Basingstoke for many years. We do not book appointments or manage this service, but more information and contact details may be obtained from the osteopath's themselves by visiting the osteopath's website for further details of the services they offer.
We are delighted to advise you that the practice is able to refer you to David Keighley who whilst not operating from our site, offers psychotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy services.
David provides a service to address a number of conditions including:
Smoking cessation/weight loss
Anxiety and emotional conditions
Relationships
Further details of his services are available at his website.
We are in negotiation with a podiatrist now.
