Office Hours:
Psychology 4305 is designed to provide students with an introduction to some of the core content areas of
Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology. The course will focus on the application of psychological principles to the work
place.
Text:
Muchinsky, P. M. (2003). Psychology Applied to Work, 7th Edition.
Wadsworth Publishing Company: Belmont, CA.
Lecture: Lectures will emphasize key points. In addition, some material will be presented in more detail than the book, and
some materials not covered by the book will be presented. You will be responsible for information from both textbook and
lectures.
Course Requirements: Your final course grade will be based on 3 exams, a group presentation, an individual paper, and
class participation via the Internet.
Exams. There will be three 100-point exams given throughout the term. Exams will consist of multiple choice,
short answer, and essay questions. Each exam will cover only the material presented since the previous exam.
In other words, each exam is noncumulative.
Team Presentation/Individual Paper. The presentation will be worth 25 points and the individual paper will be
worth 50 points. You will work with your team members to prepare a short presentation. You may select the topic.
ALL TOPIC AREAS SHOULD BE APPROVED BY ME.
1.
Presentation. The presentations will be due at various times throughout the term. Due dates will
be assigned on a first come, first serve basis.
2.
Individual Paper. Each student will write a short (5-7 pages) paper on the same topic that he or
she presented to the class. Choose articles in recent (past 5 years) business or I/O journals on
the topic. Summarize and critically evaluate the topic area. The paper must include citations and
a reference list in APA format. Although you may use magazines and newspaper articles to
supplement your paper, the paper should be based on at least 2 articles from scientific journals.
References should be typed, following APA guidelines. This writing style will be taught in class.
Class Participation Via Internet. Students will receive points for responding to questions or ideas that I present on
the course web page. Each Internet assignment will be worth from 5-20 points, depending on the type of
assignment. These assignments will total 50 points.
Plagiarism, cheating, or any other honor code violation will result in failure of the course.
Final Grades: Your grade will be based on the percentage of points that you earn out of 425 total points.
