A lot of people who regularly attend the poetry festival have suggested "splitting" the festival with poetry events and activities taking place in the Spring as well as in the Autumn. We think this is a great idea, it gives Bristol two high profile, high quality celebrations of poetry in the course of the year, and also gives everyone a greater opportunity to enjoy more poetry. Bristol Poetry Festival in September will take place this year between Monday 13 and Sunday 19 of September 2010. Bristol SPRING Poetry Festival will take place over the four days, including and between, Thursday 29th April and Sunday 2nd May. We are proud to announce a stellar line up for the spring, including a rare appearance this year, from one of the most popular poets on the planet BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH performing for the first time at Bristol Poetry Festival with special guest FRANCESCA BEARD. JOHN HEGLEY also makes his Bristol Poetry Festival debut with special guest MALIKA BOOKER. There will be an amazing night of readings from GEORGE SZIRTES, RITA ANN HIGGINS and PETER BENNET. Plus an whole lot more as well Bristol Spring Poetry Festival Thursday 29 April - Sunday 2 May 2010 Special OFFER: instead of the usual £15, every ticket for the first 3 performances (Friday 12 March @ 8pm and Saturday 13th March @ 2pm and 8pm) is £10 - Sound and Fury's Kursk A Young Vic and Fuel coproduction 12 - 20 March 2010 8pm (2pm Thurs & Sats, 6.30pm & 9pm on 19 March) £15/£12 In collaboration with Bryony Lavery Commissioned by the Junction Cambridge August 2000. A British hunter-killer submarine is on patrol in the Arctic. The crew drill sleeps, eat, long for word from home, and silently shadow their target. Their lives are at once extraordinary and mundane – until a tragic event occurs that makes them question everything they are doing. As the tension mounts, the pressure they live under starts to take its toll. Inspired by the Russian submarine disaster of August 2000, acclaimed theatre company Sound & Fury (The Watery Part of the World and Ether Frolics) join Bryony Lavery (Stockholm) to invoke the life of submariners, fathoms below the icy seas on the fraying front line of the Cold War. http://www.bristololdvic.org.uk/618. html U Dance South West Regional Dance Youth platfom, Saturday 13 March, City Academy, 6.30 - 9pm. White Caps - A Bristol Old Vic and Theatre Bristol cocommission. 31 March - 03 April 2010, 8pm, £10/£7 leading on from Champloo Youth Crew's participation at U Dance (above), the ever industrious company are showing their new production at Bristol Old Vic. White Caps follows the journey of two men as they embark on an epic adventure; a compassionate, exhilarating search for completeness. Expressed through cinematic film and bboy performance, White Caps brings one of the world's most exciting and raw cultures into the theatre. Witness this new fusion of moving image and break dancing performed by Champloo Dance Company. Bristol based Champloo create dance works through live performance and film with a strong emphasis on cross art form collaboration. They teach extensively and manage the Champloo Youth Crew. Champloo have created some podcasts to give some insight into the journey they have taken to reach their goal. Wilkie Branson, Director, explained, "When we began White Caps in June 2009 we knew that the creation itself would draw some parallels between the show's journey and it's struggles, but we had no idea just how much of an adventure it would become. After setting out to create a dance piece it wasn't long before we found ourselves on an epic pathway to reach our real-life White Caps. We decided to capture the story behind the show and publish it in video podcasts so everyone could share in this journey." http://www.vimeo.com/6448602 Episode 2 http://www.vimeo.com/6898676 Episode 3 http://www.vimeo.com/7805344 Episode 4 http://www.vimeo.com/8456974 Champloo are a company to watch on their journey to great things.....we highly recommend this show For tickets please call Bristol Old Vic Box Office 0117 987 7877 The Box Performed by Who Cares? NEWS St Paul’s Reggae Orchestra In partnership, St George’s Bristol and St Paul’s Learning & Family Centre have developed one of the most inspiring and unique community music projects in Bristol and the South West. An idea initially coming from local resident, Chris Williams, the St Paul’s Reggae Orchestra is an exciting opportunity created to bring diverse and local talent from across inner city Bristol to the wider audiences of Bristol. Through the Reggae music genre, St George’s Bristol (and its Migrations project) and St Paul’s Learning & Family Centre have brought together community musicians to create an orchestra that is based within the community, owned by the community and shared by all in Bristol. It gives a platform for unsung local musicians to develop their talents, work with a new people, and perform at some of the city’s biggest community events and venues. consists of a wide range of instruments such as a horn section, a rhythm section, violins and percussion, it will also feature musicians playing African xylophone, Djembe drums and many other more unusual instruments. Meeting weekly to rehearse, the orchestra are working towards a portfolio of well-known Reggae music, as well as music created specifically for the orchestra from composers within the community. Dennis Rollins, as a mentor to the orchestra, says – “This is one of the most inspiring and unique community music projects in Bristol and the South West. It gives a platform for unsung local musicians to develop their talents, work with a new people, and perform at some of the city’s biggest community events and venues.” To find out about either of these organisations contact chino@offkeymarketing.co.uk or stella.quinlivan@bristol.gov.uk Grassroots Grants Deadline: March 2011 The Orchestra is made up of nearly 40 musicians, from a diversity of cultures, with a variety of musical skills and experience. It is led by local musicians, Norma Daykin (Musical Director) and Charles Brian (Creative Advisor and Ambassador). The project will also be mentored and supported by the award winning Trombonist Dennis Rollins. The orchestra is unique because although like many others it So far, Grassroots Grants has funded thousands of projects, from sports for the disabled to arts for older people, activities for young people, counselling services, employment programmes, food parcel services, music groups and village halls. It is these small, volunteer led groups that make a real difference to the lives of local people, and often a small amount of money can go a long way. Applying for Grassroots Grants is quick, easy and help is available. You can apply for money until March 2011. If your group ticks all the boxes, then you could apply for a Grassroots Grant of £250 - £5000 - A not-for-profit voluntary or community group in England - Led by volunteers - Active in local community 12 months or more - Average income (over three years) of less than £30,000 per year - Works for the benefit of your local community If you have any questions, please contact the Grassroots Grants helpline: T: 01223 400 331 E: grassroots@cdf.org.uk To find out about how to apply for a Grassroot Grant visit www.cdf.org.uk/web/guest/grassro ots-grants Arts & Flowers: Easton Arts Trail 2010 After lots of discussion, the registration fee will stay the same as last year - £20. As last year, the £20 pays for your name, details and a picture of your work to appear on the brochure. We didn't want to raise the fee and put people off entering, but in fact funds are rather short, so we are organising a series of fundraising events and a raffle to help raise money and awareness of the trail. The first will be a live music event at the Greenbank Pub on Saturday 6th March - watch this space for more details. We need you to spread the word and come along, if you can! For the first time this year, the trail will have a theme - Arts and Flowers, and we will be inviting people to open their gardens, as well (or even instead) of opening their houses. We are looking to join forces with Eastside Roots and local businesses to encourage art installations, activities and performances (supported by bursaries, subject to funding) in back gardens and maybe public spaces, plus a front garden competition, 'Arts and Flowers up Front', that will hopefully encourage people to get involved who may not want to open up their houses. A front garden display could be anything from a window display to an arty vegetable patch - and doesn't even have to include plants! For a chance to win some lovely prizes donated by local businesses, the cost of entry (including bunting or a sign and a mark on the map) is likely to be just £5. We are keen to hear your thoughts on this idea. If you have any other feedback, ideas or suggestions for us, or if you wish to be added to the mailing list, please get in touch at:info@eastonartstrail.co.uk.
