BRISTOL POETRY FESTIVAL
The Poetry Can is pleased to
announce a new look for the Bristol
Poetry Festival this year. A lot of
people who regularly attend the
poetry festival have suggested
"splitting" the festival with poetry
events and activities taking place in
the Spring as well as in the
Autumn. We think this is a great
idea, it gives Bristol two high
profile, high quality celebrations of
poetry in the course of the year,
and also gives everyone a greater
opportunity to enjoy more poetry.
Bristol Poetry Festival in
September will take place this year
between Monday 13 and Sunday
19 of September 2010.
Bristol SPRING Poetry Festival will
take place over the four days,
including and between, Thursday
29th April and Sunday 2nd May.
We are proud to announce a stellar
line up for the spring, including a
rare appearance this year, from
one of the most popular poets on
the planet BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH
performing for the first time at
Bristol Poetry Festival with special
guest FRANCESCA BEARD.
JOHN HEGLEY also makes his
Bristol Poetry Festival debut with
special guest MALIKA BOOKER.
There will be an amazing night of
readings from
GEORGE SZIRTES, RITA ANN
HIGGINS and PETER BENNET.
Plus an whole lot more as well

Commissioned by the Junction
Cambridge August 2000. A British
hunter-killer submarine is on patrol
in the Arctic.
The crew drill sleeps, eat, long for
word from home, and silently
shadow their target.
Their lives are at once
extraordinary and mundane – until
a tragic event occurs that makes
them question everything they are
doing. As the tension mounts, the
pressure they live under starts to
take its toll.
Inspired by the Russian submarine
disaster of August 2000, acclaimed
theatre company Sound & Fury

Ether Frolics) join Bryony Lavery

submariners, fathoms below the icy
seas on the fraying front line of the

White Caps - A Bristol Old Vic
and Theatre Bristol cocommission.
31 March - 03 April 2010, 8pm,
£10/£7
leading on from Champloo Youth
Crew's participation at U Dance
(above), the ever industrious
company are showing their new
production at Bristol Old Vic. White
Caps follows the journey of two
men as they embark on an epic
adventure; a compassionate,
exhilarating search for
completeness. Expressed through
cinematic film and bboy
performance, White Caps brings
one of the world's most exciting
and raw cultures into the theatre.
Witness this new fusion of moving
image and break dancing
performed by Champloo Dance
Company.
Bristol based Champloo create
dance works through live
performance and film with a strong
emphasis on cross art form
collaboration. They teach
extensively and manage the
Champloo Youth Crew. Champloo
have created some podcasts to
give some insight into the journey
they have taken to reach their goal.
Wilkie Branson, Director,
explained,
"When we began White Caps in
June 2009 we knew that the
creation itself would draw some
parallels between the show's
journey and it's struggles, but we
had no idea just how much of an
adventure it would become. After
setting out to create a dance piece
it wasn't long before we found
ourselves on an epic pathway to
reach our real-life White Caps. We
decided to capture the story behind
the show and publish it in video
podcasts so everyone could share
in this journey."

Silent Hobo: When out painting,
Silent Hobo is a traditionalist,
sticking to the can rather then
stencils. A character-based artist
whose style is a mix of comic art
influenced by early graffiti, manga
and 2000AD. His characters can be
seen around Bristol on walls, in
community centres, pubs, libraries,
train stations and at festivals.
His work has been exhibited in
Bristol at The Tobacco Factory,
Boca Bar, Royal West Academy of
Arts as well as in Selfridges and
the Village Underground in London.
In the studio Silent Hobo mixes

been commissioned to illustrate

'Celebrating Sanctuary'
'Celebrating Sanctuary' is an art
exhibition that takes place once a
year at The Pierian Centre, as part
of National Refugee Week. The art
on display is either by or about
refugees and asylum seekers.
This is our
6th year and part of "Working
Together for Positive Change" Bristol's response to EY2010 - the
European Year for Combating
Poverty and Social
Exclusion.
The theme of sanctuary runs
through the exhibition and it is
especially relevant this year with
Bristol becoming a 'City of
Sanctuary' .
Bristol is a multi cultural and
diverse place and that should be
celebrated. Bristol is currently
running a programme called
"Working
Together for Positive Change", and
2010 is the European Year of
Combating Poverty and Social
Exclusion. The Pierian Centre is a
CIC and is working in partnership
with other companies in Bristol to
help Create Prosperity and Social
Inclusion across the city.
The exhibition 'Celebrating
Sanctuary' aims to gives artists the
opportunity show their work, and
tell their story or the stories of
others through a variety media.
'Celebrating Sanctuary 2010' will
take place from the 11 - 21 June at
The Pierian Centre.
This year there will also be a strand
of the exhibition on display at St
Pauls Learning Centre, through out
the month of June.
If you are or know an artist who's
work addresses/ tackles any of
these issues then send up to 3
images and a description of the
work to Katy the exhibitions curator

NEWS
St Paul’s Reggae Orchestra
In partnership, St George’s Bristol
and St Paul’s Learning & Family
Centre have developed one of the
most inspiring and unique
community music projects in Bristol
and the South West.
An idea initially coming from local
resident, Chris Williams, the St
Paul’s Reggae Orchestra is an
exciting opportunity created to
bring diverse and local talent from
across inner city Bristol to the wider
audiences of Bristol. Through the
Reggae music genre, St George’s
Bristol (and its Migrations project)
and St Paul’s Learning & Family
Centre have brought together
community musicians to create an
orchestra that is based within the
community, owned by the
community and shared by all in
Bristol. It gives a platform for
unsung local musicians to develop
their talents, work with a new
people, and perform at some of the

composers within the community.
Dennis Rollins, as a mentor to the
orchestra, says –
“This is one of the most inspiring
and unique community music
projects in Bristol and the South
West. It gives a platform for unsung
local musicians to develop their
talents, work with a new people,

Arts & Flowers: Easton Arts Trail
2010
After lots of discussion, the
registration fee will stay the same
as last year - £20. As last year, the
£20 pays for your name, details
and a picture of your work to
appear on the brochure. We didn't
want to raise the fee and put
people off entering, but in fact
funds are rather short, so we are
organising a series of fundraising
events and a raffle to help raise
money and awareness of the trail.
The first will be a live music event
at the Greenbank Pub on Saturday
6th March - watch this space for
more details. We need you to
spread the word and come along, if
you can!
For the first time this year, the trail
will have a theme - Arts and
Flowers, and we will be inviting
people to open their gardens, as
well (or even instead) of opening
their houses.
We are looking to join forces with
Eastside Roots and local
businesses to encourage art
installations, activities and
performances (supported by
bursaries, subject to funding) in
back gardens and maybe public
spaces, plus a front garden
competition, 'Arts and Flowers up
Front', that will hopefully encourage
people to get involved who may not
want to open up their houses.
A front garden display could be
anything from a window display to
an arty vegetable patch - and
doesn't even have to include
plants! For a chance to win some
lovely prizes donated by local
businesses, the cost of entry
(including bunting or a sign and a
mark on the map) is likely to be just
£5. We are keen to hear your
thoughts on this idea.
If you have any other feedback,
ideas or suggestions for us, or if
you wish to be added to the mailing
list, please get in touch
at:info@eastonartstrail.co.uk.
Your opportunity to influence
commissioning practice
Are you a voluntary, community or
social enterprise organisation
based in Bristol that has
successfully bid to deliver public
services? OR an organisation that
has bid but been unsuccessful, OR
has considered bidding, but has
been put off - perhaps the work
involved was too much? Have you
worked with others to submit a bid?
Bristol City Council's Select
Committee on Third Sector
Commissioning wants to know
about your experience of
commissioning in Bristol so that
your stories can be used to
improve practice in future.
