Content of Lesson:
Introduction:




Children during class time are spoken to, outlining the rules and expectations that are
placed upon them during the Blu Earth lesson.
Teacher poses the question to students “ What is High Jump?” and shows youtube
clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CkAfx1E58M and discuss – what do you
know? How do you do it? Have you done it?
Discuss the safety concerns
Children are re-reminded about the rules and expectations
Starters:
10/15min
- Stretch
- Mountain pose: both feet together, roll feet, one hand on head (push head into
hand), hands out ¼ way then 1/2 eyes closed.
- Tree pose: raise arms straight above head, right leg is bent resting on other knee.
- Butterfly pose: sitting down, feet together, using arms slowly increase pressure
on knees
- Legs wide pose – spread legs out as wide as possible lean forward try to touch
ankles.
- Really focus on stretching calves, lower back and quads.
Donkey Tail
- Students each have a sash tucked into the back of their paints
- The aim of the game is for students to retrieve as many sashes as possible
Toilet Tiggie
- Students run around and play normal tiggie
- When tagged students must make the position of a toilet ie. Down on one knee
- To be ‘freed’ another student must sit on their knee and flush the toilet
- Highlight importance of being honest
Builders and Bulldozers
- During this game multiple cones are placed upright and upside down
- One half of the class are ‘bulldozers’ whose aim was to knock over all of the
upright cones
- The other half of the class are ‘builders’ whose aim is to rebuild and position the
knocked over cones upright.
Skill Development: 25-30min
High Jump Technique
Teacher introduces and exposes children to the two types of bars used for high jump
- hard bar – highlight that only older students use this
- soft bar
- Frosbee Flop Technique
Students like up along the line and practice their jumping skills – knees to chest (preparing them
for frosbee flop)
Students further practice this alongside the mat – it is important that students jump high enough
to clear/land on the high jump mat
Teacher explains task and identifies correct way to ‘frosbee flop’
- Students aim to jump backwards landing on their shoulder blades
- Students firstly aim to jump land on their back
- Then further knees to chest on their back
- Then progressing to their shoulder blades
- And eventually landing on shoulder blades and kicking/flicking legs back –
demonstrating the frosbee flop.
Students take turns of two at a time – teacher may need to support some students.
- Scissor Kick
- Students practice scissor kick with inside leg going over first in a scissor motion
- Teacher demonstrates and students follow/copy on flat ground
- Teacher looks out for students preferred jumping foot eg left or right
- Talk about the run up and how the best high jumpers only need 12-13 steps not long big runups
- Using cones create a curved running line where students must run alongside before jumping
- Students have a few practice runs – one at a time
WHOLE CLASS JUMP OFF
Students line up and spend time practicing their high jump skills demonstrating both frosbee flop
and scissor kick.
Encourage students to encourage and cheer for one another
Gage students understanding and break into grade level genders ie. Grade 1 girls, grade 1
boys etc.
Warm Down 5-10min
Stretches:
- Really focus on legs, lower/and upper back and arms as these are the muscles which have
been used most.
Assessment Strategies & Criteria
- Learning objectives will be addressed at the beginning whilst stretching
- Demonstrating with students for techniques and examples etc
Resources:
- High jump bars
- High jump mat
- Saches
