N OTES FOR M ISSING S CHOOL
All requests for emergency messages to students must be approved by an administrator. Only for true emergencies will classes be interrupted and students called out for a message. For true emergencies, it would be in the best interest of your student to have a counselor or administrator deliver the message.
A L L S T U D E N T S must verify medical, dental, and legal appointments with official documentation from the provider. Students may bring in their appointment cards prior to their early dismissals or an office generated note after their appointment. Some students are even showing copies of their charges!
R EPORT C ARDS :
Reports cards will be distributed to all students during morning homeroom on Wednesday, October
10. When your student brings home their report card, please review it with him or her.
We appreciate support in helping our students learn the importance of regular school attendance, and following procedures for verifying reasons for absences.
Parents are also reminded that our school day does not end until 3:17. Please do not ask for

Most students are making good choices regarding dress for school, but there are some who continue to need reminders.
Skirts and shorts should be tasteful and appropriate in length.
Midriffs and cleavage need to be covered.
Slacks so baggy that it takes a hand to keep them up may be worn anywhere except to school!

SOL T
EST
Students currently enrolled in English 11A and English 11AA will take the writing SOL test on October
23 and 25. To graduate from high school with a standard or advanced studies diploma requires a pass on this test. Please encourage your student to be well rested, motivated and ready to show what they know on that important test. (The reading test, also required for graduation, will be given in January with all other end-ofcourse tests.)
L UNCH
Students and parents are asked not to order lunch and have it delivered to our cafeteria. We particularly need cooperation from our parents.
Also, outside guests can eat lunch with us only if they have prearranged a visit with an administrator. We need at least one day’s notice. The visitor will need to check in at the office and wear a visitor pass.

The WMHS Art Department is sponsoring our semester art field trip to Washington, D.C. again this year!! The students are very excited about it already. The field trip will be Friday, October 26, 2007, from
7am to 8pm. The forms will be given to students in the next few weeks. The first 40 students to bring forms and fee of $30.00 will be on the trip. We will be visiting The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, The National
Gallery of Art, and the Hirshhorn Gallery and Sculpture Garden. These designations may change due to exhibits!
All of our students, Art Club members, and National Art Honor Society students are eligible to participate. It is a very enriched and instructional field trip to view some of the world’s most famous masterpieces in our nation’s capital.
The National Art Honor Society (sponsored by Mrs. B. Miller) met, September 12, for the first time and took care of nominating officers, discussing Homecoming Float ideas, setting a date for our induction ceremony, and gathered ideas for a school/community service project.
Our NAHS officers are: President – Ashley Dotson Vice President – Jenessa Bryant
Treasure – Hunter Graham Secretary – Jeremy Biby
Congratulations to these terrific art students for being nominated and voted in by their peers. Once memberships are closed, we will probably have 33 members in the NAHS. Students do not have to include this club in the club rotation cycle to be a member, so they can participate in various other clubs of interest.
The NAHS meets on Green Club: Cycle “B” activity days. We will meet again in Nov., Feb., & April.
Everyone is excited about supporting and promoting ART!!!!
F AMILY , C AREER , C OMMUNITY L EADERS OF A MERICA (FCCLA) If you haven’t joined FCCLA yet, it’s not too late! FCCLA meets on the second Wednesday during white club months. Members are asked to pay a $12 fee and must be paid by October 15. This year we have planned a variety of activities and community service project.
Unfortunately we will not be participating in the homecoming float parade because of other commitments to other clubs and sports, our officers are involved in.
O
UR FIRST FUNDRAISER
will be handed out at the October meeting and Mrs. Harris will have prizes for the people who sell the most. We encourage everyone to help out and try to raise money for this year. In
November and March we are planning to serve meals at Valley Mission in Staunton. Also in November we will be helping making Thanksgiving Baskets for underprivileged families. In October members will be offered the chance to take home a Salvation Army bear to dress and return to give to the needy children for
Christmas. During May, we will participate in March of Dimes Walk America; students will raise money and walk one Saturday to support the medical research to stop premature births. Another obligation FCCLA has taken on as one of our projects is to help with Brittany’s
FCCLA 2007-08 Officers
Helping Hand. Our officers brought in baked goods in

September to help with a bake sale they had and in
November we will most likely be helping this organization

More importantly, these funds will also be used for the Freshman Class in general throughout all four of their years here at Wilson H.S., including their future prom!! We will be starting numerous fundraising activities very soon, but we also graciously accept any parent/volunteer assistance or donations throughout the school year. Parent and volunteer support is essential for our
Freshman Class, and is very much welcomed and encouraged!
For any Freshman Council questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Freshman Council sponsors, Mrs. Erin Whetzel and Mrs. Diana Beam at 886-4286 (WMHS). We look forward to a great year with our Class of 2011!!

The meetings are not just on club days but once a month for project work as well. We help twice a week after school on
Tuesdays and Thursdays with tutoring whenever a member can help.
For those who like competing, once a month there is a math testing contest - National Math
League , October 23 rd this month,. Also, there is an once-a-month "math trip" for those wanting to visit a college. October 13th is Math & Science Day at JMU - some students choose this as well. There are many opportunities to explore and have fun with higher math.
Additionally, a math newsletter comes out the 1 st Tuesday of each month to inform members of upcoming events. Dues are $5 and an application can still be obtained from Mrs. May,
Room 58.

Please mark your calendars and plan to join us in the WMHS auditorium on Saturday, October 27 th at 8:00
PM and Sunday, October 28 th at 3:00 PM when WMHS will present the musical Annie by special arrangement with Music
Theatre International.
Annie (Julie Young) is a spunky Depression-era orphan who is determined to find her parents, who abandoned her on the doorstep of the Orphanage run by Miss Hannigan (Bethanie Glover). All the orphans (Genevieve Bowles, Bri Pursley, Anna Thompson, McKenzie Critzer, Emily Beam, and Jasmine
Williams), l o n g for a day when they will have a family. Annie escapes in a launder’s (Hunter
Robertson) truck and the cops are “on the job.” Lt. Ward (Cody Via) soon returns Annie to the orphanage. Annie is then chosen by Grace Farrell (Kelley Harris) secretary to THE Oliver Warbucks
(Dustin Roadcap) to join him for the Christmas holidays;then, the fun really begins!
What follows next is an adventure: Annie moves into a mansion, meets a delightful house staff
(Michael Barnes, Kathleen Macias, Chrissy Roadcap, Alexa White, Raven Williams), and other servants
(Taylor Thompson, Chris Rodriguez, Travis Hudson, Jacob Slaght, Adam Cowherd, Zach Dishman,
Rico Goodwin and Cody Via). The plot thickens when imposters posing as Annie’s real parents (Sam
Bowman and Jennifer Mitchell), try to snag the reward money.
President FDR (Michael Nargi) makes a special appearance and Star-To-Be, Chrissy Roadcap, longs to see her name on Broadway. There is even a lovable mutt, Sandy (Abby), a stray dog, who Annie rescues from dog catchers (Rico Goodwin and Zach Dishman).
Reserved seating is $10.00,
general admission is $8.00, and children’s admission is $5.00.

Jennifer Mitchell and Todd Beard have been working for several months on the one-act play,
I Bring You Flowers, by William Lang, produced through special arrangements with
Baker’s Plays. Jennifer plays a young woman, Faye, who is struggling with the death of her only child, Lela. Lela died in a tragic accident and Faye is unwilling/unable to accept the reality that Lela is gone. Todd plays her husband, Jim, who faithfully comes to visit his young wife, who has been hospitalized because of her inability to deal with/accept the death of her daughter. Jim tries desperately throughout the play to connect with his wife, bringing her to the very edge of reality as he tries to get her to relive the day that little Lela’s life was taken. Jim and Faye experience other events of their young married life as well, a vacation in Hawaii, dinner at a Chinese restaurant, a trip to San Francisco, and finally that tragic day when Lela runs out into the road. Jim must walk a careful tightrope of pushing Faye into reality, but not pushing her over the edge. Faye struggles to maintain her fantasy world in which Lela is the center, but one that excludes Jim.
Mr. Stephen Winslow who directed last year’s one-act, Where Have all the Lightning
Bugs Gone by Louis Catron to a first place District win and a third place Regional win, and the musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers by David Landay and Lawrence Kasha returns again to direct this play for VHSL competition. Buffalo Gap will host the District competition on October 22, 2007 beginning at 6:00 PM.
Admission is FREE, so please plan on attending.

The WMHS SCA annually delivers turkey dinners on Thanksgiving morning to
350+ underprivileged families in
Staunton, Augusta County, and
Waynesboro. This event is made possible by contributions received from area churches, organizations, families, and school fundraisers. The cost to feed a family is approximately $30. If you or someone you know is interested in donating, we need a commitment by
November 9 so we can estimate the number of families we will be able to feed. Along with monetary donations, we also need volunteers for delivery on
Thanksgiving morning.

Hornet News October 2007
WMHS is a High School That Works site. This is a federally-funded program designed to support student achievement in all aspects of the student’s high school experience and beyond. Mrs.
Beverly Miller is the HSTW site chairperson and works with the large site committee to renew the management plan (grant) each year. The federal funds are partially matched by Augusta County
Schools. These funds are used for staff development, tutoring, team activities, and administering the NAEP test to sixty seniors, just to mention a few.
This year we have a Technical Assistance Visit that will take place October 30th, 31st, and
November 1 st . A team of eight people will be observing and determining WMHS’s level of implementation of the HSTW goals and key practices, next steps the school plans to take, and challenges the school faces. Thanks to all the administrators, faculty members, parents, business & postsecondary representatives, and the students for attending these meetings and assisting with student achievement and success.
