Regents Chemistry Syllabus Mr. Beauchamp beauchampj@pearlriver.org www.mrbeauchamp.com Expectations Be on time & prepared for class every day Respect – self, family, classmates, teachers, school property Take Responsibility – for your actions, your grades, your future Diligence - Complete all assignments with excellence and on time o Study – terms and concepts DAILY o Practice solving problems and answering questions DAILY No Whining! No Excuses! Supplies Pen (black or blue ink) and Pencil with eraser every day Notebook (preferably a 3-ring binder but spiral will do) o Chemistry notes must not be mixed with notes from other classes. 2-pocket folder – preferably plastic. o Keep reference tables and handouts in folder. o Save all tests and quizzes to study for quarterly exams, midterm, and Regents exam Scientific Calculator – NOT a graphing calculator Colored pencils, colored pens or highlighters Chemistry Reference Tables were handed out on the first day of class. These tables must be brought to class every day and used for every homework. Reference Tables will be used on every test. Students who damage or lose their reference tables are responsible to print out another copy from the internet. Text Book An optional textbook is available upon request. Our primary print resource is the Prentice Hall Brief Review for the New York Regents Exam – Chemistry: The Physical Setting by Patrick Kavanah, 2010. Students must NOT write in the Regents Review Book Additional resources will be available online at my teacher page or at www.mrbeauchamp.com Leave the review book at home for the year Students are required to read the entire review book throughout the year Grading Exams & Projects = 40% (approximately every other week) Quizzes = 20% (approximately every week) Lab = 20% (Wearing goggles and lab safety affect your lab grade) Homework = 10% (graded for correctness not just completion) Classroom Performance = 10% o completing classroom assignments and following classroom expectations improve your classroom performance grade o tardiness & excessive pass usage will decrease your grade Test Retakes All students have the opportunity to retake a different version of any test to improve their grades. To qualify for a retake, the student must do the following: 1. Satisfactorily complete all homework leading to the test (redoing HW may be required) 2. Submit properly written test corrections (see Test Corrections section) 3. Attend at least one extra help session to learn what he or she did not understand 4. Complete an additional practice worksheet 5. Schedule a time (not class time) to retake the test within 1 week of receipt of test All students who score below a 75% must do the above requirements and retake the test. Test Corrections All students must write test corrections for every wrong answer on their tests. Test corrections must state the chemistry concepts supporting the right answer, not just the correct answer. For example, the question might ask, “What is the charge of the nucleus of an aluminum atom?” The correct answer is +13. The test correction for this question should state the following: The nucleus of any atom has a positive charge equal to the number of protons in the nucleus. The number of protons is the atomic number and can be found on the periodic table. Aluminum has an atomic number of 13 and therefore the nucleus must have a +13 charge. Test Corrections count as homework grades. Homework All homework assignments are to help students practice using the chemistry concepts to solve problems. Homework problems may be assigned from the Chemistry Review Book, BarronsRegents.com, or handouts. Homework questions will be extremely similar to or identical to quiz and test questions. Homework is due at the start of the period. Place it in the bin as soon as you enter the room and find your seat. Late homework immediately loses 10 points and continues to lose more points the longer it is late. After I discuss the answers in class, the homework assignment is no longer acceptable. An alternative assignment may be completed for partial credit. Students may earn a homework waiver by doing the following: o score 90% or higher on the 2 preceding tests or quizzes o complete all required homework Projects count as test grades and not homework. Students may not receive a waiver for projects. Extra Credit Extra credit assignments may be completed to boost homework, lab, or class performance grades only. Students must discuss extra credit assignments with me prior to starting Extra Credit must be handed in prior to two weeks before the end of each marking period Labs The New York State Regents requires students to complete 1200 minutes of laboratory time with satisfactory lab reports to qualify to take the regents exam. This equates to 30 labs. Pearl River sets a standard for the cumulative number of labs a student must complete to earn a passing grade in Chemistry class by quarter: Quarter 1: 8 Labs Quarter 2: 16 Labs Quarter 3: 24 Labs Quarter 4: 30 Labs If you are absent on a day that we do a lab in class, it is your responsibility to come the LAST THURSDAY of that month after school to make up the missed lab. The labs will ONLY be set up on that day. If you do not attend, you will have no other opportunities to complete the lab. This means you will be given a ZERO, and possibly risk your ability to take the Regents exam in June (if this is a persistent issue). Extra Help I am available for extra help by appointment before, during, and after school. Students interested in extra help should just ask me. Students who score below 75% on tests and quizzes will be required to attend extra help until their grades are over 75% Absence If you miss class for any reason, you are responsible for completing all class work and homework you missed and getting it to me in a timely manner. What is considered “timely” will depend on the complexity of the assignment and the duration and reason for the missed class. o If you are in school that day but miss my class, I expect the work to be handed in that same day. o Most other absences, I will give you one day to catch up with missed work. o You will need to see me to discuss whether you need more time than one day. Take the phone numbers and e-mail addresses of a few students in class so that you can get the information needed from them. Check my teacher page or mrbeauchamp.com for notes and assignments. e-mail me if you need Academic Honesty All answers to homework and lab questions should be your own words. Do not copy answers from other students – both of you will lose credit. You may work together to share knowledge so that both of you understand the concepts and methods better but do not just give or receive answers. Lab data can be shared but answers to questions and conclusions may not. I confiscate homework being copied in my class for other teachers, other teachers will do the same for me Projects may require using information from the internet or other sources. All sources of information must be cited.
