PALO ALTO, California, November 4, 2011 - The Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra will perform their second concert of the season on Saturday, December 17. The program features two famous Viennese composers whose lives and works bridged the Classical and Romantic eras. The powerful opening chords of Beethoven’s Coriolan
Overture make a fitting introduction to his titanic Piano Concerto #5 (“Emperor”) , performed by PACO talented alumna
Dina Glendening-Keller. We close our program with Felix Mendelssohn’s brilliant Italian Symphony whose warmth and charm balances the ster n beauty of Beethoven’s works. For this special concert, the Sinfonia Orchestra and Senior
PACO are combined to create our largest ensemble of the season. In addition, several movements from the great chamber music masterpieces will be performed by our most advanced players. The concert, to be conducted by
PACO Music Director Benjamin Simon, will take place at 8:00 p.m. at Dinkelspiel Auditorium, Stanford University, Palo
Alto, CA.
About the soloist
Dina Glendening-Keller, pianist, is a Palo Alto native and PACO alumna who teaches piano in her Los Gatos studio and at Harker School in San Jose. Having studied viola with
William Whitson (PACO’s founder), Dina received undergraduate degrees from Oberlin
College-Conservatory in Neuroscience and in Piano Performance. At Oberlin she studied piano with Robert Mc Donald and Monique Duphil. Continuing her musical studies, Dina earned a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of
Michigan.
The recipient of many honors, Ms. Glendening-Keller was awarded the Edward Frolich award in Piano
Performance and a full scholarship and teaching assistantship at the University of Michigan. In 2002 Ms. Glendening-
Keller professionally recorded Mozart’s Piano Concerto #21 with musicians from both Oberlin and the University of
Southern California for the album, “Mozart for Modulation.” Dina’s extensive teaching experience includes faculty positions at the Community School of Music and Art in Mountain View, the San Francisco Conservatory Preparatory
Division, and Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.
Another area of interest for Dina has been in composition and improvisation both as a performer and teacher.
Since attending the Walden School’s Teacher Training Institute in 2007 and 2009, Dina has been collaborating with
Walden co-founder Patricia Plude in writing a series of improvisational etudes for piano, to be released in 2012. These etudes embody her newfound teaching methodology of discovering musical patterns and building technique through creative play. In August 2010, Dina joined the faculty of PACO’s summer workshop, designing and implementing a musicianship program that incorporates her philosophy of infusing theoretical discovery and improvisation.
About PACO
Founded in 1966, the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra is composed of the Bay Area's most talented musicians chosen by competitive auditions. The young musicians typically enter the PACO organization at the "Superstrings" level, moving up through the Preparatory, Debut, Sinfonia and Senior PACO orchestras. As being one of the few youth orchestras in the nation devoted exclusively to chamber music, PACO performs adventurous repertoires, features first class soloists, tours internationally and accomplishes frequent recordings. Appointed music director in
2002, violist Benjamin Simon has brought with him a new level of energy and creativity in directing PACO programs, while continuing its tradition of excellence in performance .
