San Francisco Bay Area, Region 3&4 Hosted by: Mission College 3000 Mission College Blvd, CA, Santa Clara, CA 95054 408-855-5203 September 2011 Submitted by Christina Oborn, MPA, Interim Director, Bay Area HWI HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM The Bay Area HWI participated in securing a HHS Grant, Community College Consortia to Educate Health Information Technology Professionals, for the San Francisco Bay Area. Mission College is one of the thirteen community colleges, led by Los Rios CCD, in four western states selected to implement six month training programs in electronic health record implementation over a two year period. The online training started on October 4, 2010, with a program of courses designed for the roles of Practice Workflow & Information Management Redesign Specialist, Implementation Specialist, and Technical Software Support. The first cohort graduated April 1 and another cohort began April 5, 2011. WORKSHOPS Twenty-nine (29) LVN’s attended a week-long IV Therapy and Blood Withdrawal Certification course in June. An NCLEX-RN Preparatory Review course was scheduled for July 2011. MEETINGS/CONFERENCES Attended the June 22, 2011 meeting of the Bay Area Mental Health & Education Workforce Collaborative in Oakland, CA, and presented highlights of current projects of the Bay Area HWI, including a mental health career exploration project in Santa Clara county called the Silicon Valley Mental Health Collaborative. Participated in the Bay Area Community College Consortium (BACCC) regional meeting on June 16, 2011. Conferred with the BACCC on a Bay Area Workforce Funding Collaborative program opportunity. Joined other HWI directors at the quarterly HWI directors meeting and statewide HWI advisory committee meeting on May 19 and 20, 2011. Attended the California Association of Associate Degree Nursing Program Directors Conference, May 4-6, 2011, at Asilomar, Monterey County, CA. HEALTH SCIENCE EDUCATORS’ INSTITUTE Attended the Health Science Educators’ Institute, June 27-29, in Garden Grove, CA, as the postsecondary partner of the Andrew Hill High School Health and Human Services Academy team. The goal of the Institute is for the team, composed of teachers, administrators, counselors, postsecondary partners and industry partners to develop, enrich or improve their health science career pathway, using the Strategic Pathway Assessment process. The Institute is a partnership between the California Department of Education, the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, health care partners and the Kern Resource Center. WORKFORCE FUND DEVELOPMENT Collaborated with NOVA and Work2FutureWorkforce Investment Boards, industry and educational partners to submit a Dept of Labor, ETA grant, titled Silicon Valley Skills Accelerator project for the H-1B Technical Skills Training Grants competition.
